Greetings everybody...I'm the proud owner of a 1978 Birchaven that I just picked up from the widow of Dan Hudson of the Dixie Flatlander's. I understand Dan had legendary status with his GMC work. I am writing a laundry list of things it needs, as it had been sitting in their garage almost 4 years. I had a 26' Royale, rear bath for about 6 years back in the 90's, so I have a little GMC knowledge, probably just enough to get myself in trouble. So I thought I'd lean on ya'll....First things first obviously, but just curious if anybody had put a sunroof in their coach? I've found a nice aftermarket unit 16x30 or 20x30 where the glass retracts up and back, kinda like a spoiler. It has a nice retractable vented sunscreen inside. Maybe I'm just asking for leak trouble, but I thought it would be neat to round out the GMC driving experience...Thanks in advance

Stephen,
Congratulations! Marie called to say you were having someone pick up the
23'. I presume you've got it in your possession now?
Here are photos Dan had me post of the macerator installation on that coach
(I doubt that it's ever had anything run through it):

Oh yeah, Re: Sunroof: I've seen a couple of installations, neither of
which impressed me: they seem puny compared to all the windshield area,
and to be just another source of unwanted heat. JMHO, since you asked. :-)

Welcome back aboard!
Yes, I think a sunroof would mostly just be another place for the roof to leak. But some have installed them.
A few months ago I ran into a long time GMC'er, Ed Larid. (He lives in his 3rd coach but isn't currently active in GMC stuff.) Ed has had 2 coaches with sunroofs. (They both happened to be Birch's.) I took pictures of his pictures. I suspect the sunroof on the '78 Birch (Ed's 2nd coach) is close to the sunroof you describe. The "77 had two smaller ones, one over each front seat. The sunroofs are hard to see but ... Select each coach's album from the bottom of this page:

Here are some pics of a "junk" GMC with a sun roof:

I have also seen a small sunroof in the bathroom. (no pictures)
I am sure there are others.

Stephen,
Glad the 23' turned out to be what you wanted. Hope you'll post photos.
As I told you, I never got the chance to see what Dan had done -- just
knew if he did it it HAD to be good. :-)
