Hi,
I'm sure ,I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem
When I need a Battery operated Tool ,the Battery is too low to use.
I end up dragging my Power Cord and drill to do the job.
I thought I had the problem solved ,I hooked up a Timer,to let the Battery's
that were on a power strip charge for 2 hours a day.
That seemed like a good idea but it didn't work.
Anyone have a good idea to keep them charged automatically.

Yeah: Quit buying HF cordless tools. :-)
Seriously, the DeWalt tools' batteries are the best I ever used from the
standpoint of retaining charge. I've never had one spontaneously lose its
charge between uses except for one that was at the end of its useful life
after several years. I replaced it with an eBay rebuilt one which has done
just as well for about 2 years. The DeWalt charger is also great -- it
fits all of their batteries ('though maybe not the newer higher voltage
than my 12 VDC and the Lithium batteries).
No more Skil, Craftsman, Black & Decker, HF, Makita, nor other brands than
DeWalt for me.

Ken,
I bought a complete set of DeWalt 18VDC cordless tools a number of years ago out of the USA and they have served me well. They came
with NiCad batteries and I cannot say the same for them. I had three in total and numbered them and would run them down before
recharging them. When they died I decided to go for Lithium batteries and was gob smacked at how much they cost. I found a deal for
three of them on eBay in the USA and bought them. Unfortunately they require a special charger which I had to buy here in Australia.
I did not want to risk buying one in the USA and running it through a step down transformer. I have a Sears cordless drill that I
brought with me when I retired and the charger blew up when I tried to run it through a step down transformer.
I have bought HF 1/2" cordless drill to keep in Double Trouble as its just not cost effective for the amount of use it gets.
Regards,
Rob M.

The Home Despot Ryobi tools have been orders of magnitude better than anything else I have come across. My 18V Drill which is 10 yrs old and has been dropped dozens of times and performed the drywall screw driving for an entire house still works. I have a newer lighter one now that uses the smaller 18V lithium batteries and they last a long time, and the charger knows when to not charge them. The newer batteries also work on the older tools, and make the 4" circular saw actually worth using. I get several cuts per charge as opposed to *one*.

Rob,
I never claimed DeWalt batteries would last forever Up side Down.
I'll lay dollars (NOT $10,000) to donuts the HF batteries will be dead and
unwilling to hold a charge on the rare occasion when you DO try to use it.

"including the batteries"???
That might make them worth a try.
They might renege if they hear how long we kept the '72 Dodge with the
JCPenney "lifetime battery". Firestone stores were still replacing the
battery every couple of years for about 10 years after JCP contracted with
them to fulfill that warranty. Too bad the rest of the Dodge fell apart.

Some small print about "...the vehicle in which originally installed...", I
guess. Another Henderson, who strongly resembles me, had it by then (which
considerably expedited the falling apart -- funny about teenage boys and
big old Monaco station wagons they were raised in). :-)

I have found with cordless drills you get what you pay for. My brothers contruction company has used every cordless know to man and we found DeWalt the best bang for your buck. The 18v drills are used everyday in harsh conditions, rain, snow and mud. We usually get about 2 years out of a drill before the batteries die. We found it cheaper to buy DeWalts on sale then try to buy just the battery. Last year we purchased a DeWalt 12v lithium drill for our aluminum railing shop. I just love this drill, it's light and has good power. We purchased a set, one drill, one impact, two batteries and a charger for $250. Not cheap but worth every cent. Come spring one set is going in my Royale.

And I thought maybe I was just biased: I still remember that in 1942, when
I was 7 years old, my Daddy was a DeWalt operator at Oak Ridge, TN. In
those days, "DeWalt" was always followed by "Saw", because that was
synonymous with "radial arm saw". We, and 'most everyone else, lived in
permanently parked travel trailers so small they had no bathrooms -- we
walked boardwalks over the mud to the communal bath house. Made the GMC
look like a mansion by comparison.
In those days, all paper grocery bags were imprinted in large black
letters, "Made in Oak Ridge, TN". Seems to me like a pretty silly
subterfuge to conceal the reason for all the construction going on there.

Someone posted pictures of how he disassembled old drill batteries, checked each cell, and assembled the good cells into "new" good batteries.
I looked but could not find the album.
This might be of use to me as I have good 9.6v and 12v Makita drills around here with "bad" batteries.
I think I would try to "fix" the 12 volt batteries. The 12v drill works better (than the 9.6v) and I like having a small dry cell 12v battery to check out electrical parts.
I am thinking of connecting the 9.6v to a long cord with a 12 power plug on the end. The voltage drop of the long cord should put the voltage down to something the drill should be able to handle.

NiCd's and NiMh are so finicky when it comes to charge curve and thermal limits.
You can almost look at the charger and determine if you will get good life from the cells.
Of course, as the folks at Chevrolet found out, it's a little different when you get to production.
Would you like a fire extinguisher with that Chevy Volt.
Best part? It's 1900 all over again (but for different reasons). Seems they had the same problems then.

I have 28 guys that work for me. I run crews of telephone/fiber optic installers. We drill alot of holes with cordless drills over the years.
dewalts and milwaulkee's definatly hold up better. however you pay for that. I have recently just only bought milwaulkee's. because we had some problems with the dewalt lithiums not taking the midwest cold. the NICD's are OK.
Dewalts had(as of 6 months ago). 2 year warantee's on batteries. the milwaulkee's have 5 years. and we do not have the problems with dead batteries when it is -10 on the milwaulkee's.
the rigid's are OK, and they are waranteed. however they do burn up quickly drilling 3/4 holes. tried some early this year, and we were collecting on warantee often. they would be great with non-industrial use.
as for the reaching and having a dead drill. the milwaulkee's do have a battery status guage on the new ones.
you do get what you pay for with drills.
