I have a battery operated set of ear muffs for working at the shop. They have a built in amplifier so with them on I can actually hear better. When there is a noise frequency spike they auto dampen the noise. Keeps me from yelling when they are on my head and removes the need to take them off or occupy a hand to lift one side for conversation. I can hear the radio in the shop better even with background noise present. Not sure exactly how they work but they work well. I think they were about $60 at Praxair where I buy my welding supplies

Buzkin,
As a Motorola Dealer, I actually sell Peltor headsets and here in Canada so I can tell you that model runs around $200.
They have a minimum setting for the ambient noise level so you can always hear around you.
We sold a factory a bunch of them to solve the "getto blaster wars".
We sell alot of the WorkTunes model front our store which doesn't have ambient noise but makes cutting the lawn much more enjoyable and quiet.
