Here is the solution:

http://www.aearo.com/pdf/comm/alert_full.pdf

-25 db of noise reduction.
-Spouse and you can each listen to your own favorite music or radio station
-adjustable ambient sound monitoring so you can listen to the coach or your spouse at the volume you like!
-jack for external music or 2-way radio.
-industrial duty construction.

Selective hearing at its best!

Those headsets look interesting.

Any ideas of costs? Have you tried one?

Big speakers just add noise to the noise. Many headsets are available for reasonable money ($25-200) that could be connected to the existing dash mounted radio. Problem is they make conversation difficult and necessary noise (warning horns, etc.) difficult to hear.

One step up would be headsets with active noise canceling circuits ($600-1500) that cut down significantly on low frequency sounds. Much nicer in noisy environments.

And, if you really want to go all out go for a voice activated multiple headset intercom system that allows conversation among passengers all while enjoying the radio, iPod, CD, etc. ($300-2000 plus headsets.)

Just a couple more fun ways to spend money.

It is illegal in most states to drive with headphones.

Buzkin,
As a Motorola Dealer, I actually sell Peltor headsets and here in Canada so I can tell you that model runs around $200.

They have a minimum setting for the ambient noise level so you can always hear around you.

We sold a factory a bunch of them to solve the "getto blaster wars".

We sell alot of the WorkTunes model front our store which doesn't have ambient noise but makes cutting the lawn much more enjoyable and quiet.
