For those of you that have majicjack at home, there's a new Iphone app that will allow you to call anywhere using your majicjack service and number--it's free when you have wifi

In the AppStore it's simply "magicjack". The free download sounds compelling, but I don't use a Magic Jack...

[GMCnet] help, drive belt has broken in Manhattan! [message #152421 is a reply to message #152419] |

Hi,
We are parked in Manhattan (of all places) and one of my belts was badly perished and has come off. It runs around the alternator, fan belt, just below the fan belt(what drive is that?) and the power steering.
1. Can I still drive it, it's starting fine, fan belts working, guessing it won't charge the alternator is all?!
2. Can't read any part number on the belt - any suggestions on what it might be and how hard/ where to get a replacement?
3. Is Tia major job to refit it?
The other 2 belts are fine although the one to the air con is twisted, any hints to getting that on track?
Thanks!

My suggestion is to locate a NAPA store and order all three belts.
If your lights go dim, you can hold on the Battery switch to bring current
from the rear 'house' batteries. I assume you have tools so you can do this
is their parking lot..but it will take some time and you will get dirty.
You can also check your Black List for people in the area where you might
have some help.
Can't give you assistance on the belt numbers as I don't know what engine
and if any mods(double pulley) have been done.
Good luck...and maybe someone else will chime in here..

Thanks, it's an olds 455, '73 GMC Canyon Lands.
Is it safe to drive it a bit? Seems the belt only drives the fan on the alternator? but I'm pretty ignorant so not sure.
House battery is at front but haven't been driving so it's pretty flat. Gene battery is good so can move that up for now.
Thanks!

No problem running it without an alternator except youu battery will go down, very quickly if you drive at night with the headlights on.
If you use the boost switch to connect it to the house batteries (or use a small jumper from the small hot terminal to the +12 volt stud) it will get power from the house system. If that starts going low then use the Onan to keep it charged up.
I drove with my Onan going for 200 miles once until I could buy a replacement alternator when mine went bad.
Do you need the belt numbers?
The twisted air conditioner belt might need replacement as it probably will twist again as it gets a "set" when running twisted.
However I would suggest that you just leave it off for now as you don't need the air conditioner at this time of year.
You have to loosen the power steering belt (center one) in order to get the alternator belt on but the air conditioner belt goes on last so you can easily put it on later without touching the other two belts.
