Great wisdom is sometimes a little slow to travel North...but it does get
here...and I'm sure there is a reason that I just don't understand.. (get
to the point! Editor)
OK. We have gone TV digital here in Nova Scotia, which is to say the old
TV's around here, specifically in my garage, are no longer compatible with
the new digital signal.
So once again (the first time was for the GMC), I am looking for a
converter or is it an inverter to change a Digital TV signal to work on an
older style Analogue TV. It doesn't have to be new...attached dust balls
are perfectly acceptable...
if you are replacing your old TV for a newer version and have no further
use for the con-in-verter ?? or if you have a new one that you have never
used, I would like to purchase it and will of course pay shipping.
Thanks
Mike in NS...settling in for a winter in NS...46*F right now at my
place..and my lawn needs that last mowing...which it will not get!!

Mike,
I have two brand new (one still in the box never opened, the
other taken out just to see if/how it would work in my area
and put back into box) Zenith DTT901 digital TV
tuner/converters. (Works great, by the way.)
You can have either one or both for what I paid for them
($40 each). They were $80 but I used the $40 government coupons.
You can check them out at:
www.zenith.com/products/set-top-atsc-digital-to-analog-converter-box/DTT901/
Don't know what shipping would be. If USPS "If it fits, it
ships" box works for Canada mailing, that might work.
Let me know.

There has been other conversation about the antennas.
A new easy to build and very small antenna is called a FRACTAL antenna.
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-fractal-antenna-for-HDTV-DTV-plus-/
This link takes you to a very simple version. the next versions doubles the bends.
The actual antenna is about the size of a 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper and is flat so it can store easily.
reception is very directional but in comparison pulls in a stronger signal and of course you can make more arrays and connect together to increase signal.
I find for long distances, 50 miles or so, you get what I call signal wave... the signal will move about and you will go in and out. This especially shows up between hot and cold weather spurts.
If nothingn else, this is an interesting project.

You can find analogue to digital converters in many stores or on Ebay. They are dirt cheap now. Another thing that works is to find an older Directv reciever (the ones that were purchased not leased) and useit as a converter.

I wish I understood all I know about fractal antennas.
I know.
It hit the scene a while back and is becoming of interest because they are so small.
One array is only about 8.5 x 11 inches and flat. Some one in a GMC could store it in a note book or flat box, slip beind the couch or next to the driver or passenger.
The reception far surpasses any other when comparing size and even when comparing actual antenna versus the Fractal.
It certainly is worth looking up and I do suggest that anyone interested go ahead and make one just to try out. Talk about portability.
The Web suggests a reflector but I have made some without and I question the need for the reflector at all.
Just passing info along, maybe someone can use it.

Ditto, Ditto and Ditto.
I'm dumping a top of the line broadcast monitor from the 90's that I used to watch DVD's.
They make incredible SD pictures. That being said, the $99 HD set I bought for my daughters college dorm room runs circles around it.
In an RV, space and power are at a premium. Time to move on.

The converters were ment to continue use of the old video tube style tvs that did not have the receiver for the new frequencies.
For those who have an old set and just want it in the basement, garage, grandmas place, etc, the converter was a good idea.
I use a Video Tube style set in my office because I generally turn on the set and let it run. This is not a good practice for flat screens with the rear light source, they burn out eventually compared to the video tube that seems to last for a very long time
Also, I have found that it is much easier to have a video tube style set repaired then the flat screen units, so you see gentlemen, the video tube style sets have their uses.

How about old Tivo boxes, I have a few of those.

I think) Sounds amazing!

I really don't know but when I put 5 of my old Directtv recievers on sale, people gobbled them up to use as convertors.

They are no good for the new freq's but as an add on receiver, they only charge about 5 bucks per added recver. I'm looking for one as well.

I winter in Phoenix now and like to go to Goodwill. It is sad to see the huge number of what were very expensive CRT sets for $10 to $40 here. That includes the top of the line Sony XBR sets which were in the $1200 to $1800 range new. At least those here are going to Mexico, where the conversion has not taken place. Up north, places like Goodwill don't even want them. Of course VCR's are $5 each or less, and VCR tapes at St. Vincent de Paul are ten for $1.
Kinda like the technological progress since GMC's were built. Sad, but true.

How does that work? Are you saying I can connect the sat. input to a tv antenna and the output to the tv and it will work as a digital converter on an older tv?

If you have satellite service (DirecTV or Dish Network) the
satellite company does the job of converting the new digital
format down to the old analog (NTSC) format.
Depending upon which digital-to-analog converter you buy,
you can watch local digital TV on your old analog set as well
as the satellite service to which you subscribe.
I use an antenna for off-air reception of all local channels
on all sets in the house, regardless of whether they are old
or new style.
I have satellite service that is made for my Hi Def "new" TV
sets that do not need the converters as the sets that used to
occupy those two locations. I still have a number of analog
sets that use the converters. Two of the "old" sets are flat
screen models that have an S-Video input and can be configured
for both the old 4x3 and new 16x9 screen formats. With the
ChannelMaster converter, these two 14" LCD TVs are capable of
720p picture reproduction. I have a 20" version of these two
Panasonic Viera LCD sets in my 30' Cedar Creek travel trailer.
If your satellite service "requires" that you have a landline
phone to get their service, just tell them that you use cell
phones only.
No, you won't be able to get your "home" local channels via the
satellite if you get too far away from home, but getting the
local digital channels off-air on your old style TV makes it
a somewhat economical solution.
You WILL need to have a means to get BOTH signals to your old
TV. You can get a non-HD satellite receiver that feeds your TV
on Channel 3 or 4. If you have composite input capability
(L & R audio plus video) on your TV, that will give a better
picture. S-Video will do even better; the best you can get
with a converter and analog set. FCC prohibited converters
from offering the composite video option to stimulate sales
of the new types of sets.
There are many ways to do all this stuff. Ya pays yer loot
and takes yer chances.

Hello,
just some useless info here ??...
Tropospheric ducting, causes signals to travel on different paths. The hot and cold air layers can cause whats called ducting.
The signal can dissapear, because it's being Ducted away, or you could get signals from a large distance away showing up for a while.
Other variations also that space does not permit....
You may have noticed on analog TV, how other stations can override the channel you are trying to watch...., another instance.
I remember in england one time i recieved, French, Dutch and German TV signals, that overrode the local stations !!!!
I believe this happens more in spring and autumn.
you can even get forecasts for it....
Well hope this has been interesting reading !!!! Yawn
