I recently noticed a gmc about 1,000 miles away from me on craigslist,i'm probably going to be laughed at for asking this,but is a gmc that's been sitting for about 10 years worth restoring???

Be certain that it is a GMC tze -- and not a class C GMC.
Perhsps someone here or a Black List member is close enough to inspect it for you.

GMC's are just like anything else, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! ;-)
CAVEAT EMPTOR!
IIRC GMC odometers go to 99,999 and then to 00,000 so 60,000 miles could be 160,000, 260,000, etc.

It has to be drivable to move it 1000 miles. Anything setting 10
years is probably not drivable and what Rob has said "You get what you
pay for. Plan on spending 15 to 20 thousand dollars to get it in
acceptable shape.

Please post the year and model of the coach you are asking about.
Many if not all GMC coachs have pulled away a little from the wall. We would need a picture to judge how much is serious. The pilot light is not a major issue as far as CO is concerned. Many many people have pilot lights in older gas stoves (mine does) and a few gas refrigerators. Your house probably has a pilot light in the water heater, maybe the furnace, and if you have an older gas stove it has two pilot lights.
I would be more interested in the possibility of the refrigerator springing a gas leak (very rare occurrence) and the propane getting into the motor home. I'd still seal it up but anchoring the cabinet to the wall may not be necessary.
I would recommend a CO and propane detector inside the coach just in case.

Not sure where you are but we've just listed ours in New York (and it's not $1500), but we've just driven it 9000 miles and it runs well. Very sad to sell but we're heading back to NZ for a bit and need the money to help pay for my wife's latest album shes recording In NY.

My brother purchased a 76 Palm Beach in Bakersfield, Ca that had
been sitting for 10 years. The lady let us work on it in the driveway
for 4 days. He then drove it to my place in Manteca, CA where we put
on a set of airbags. He then drove it to his place in WA. He and his
wife did a little more work on the inside and used it for about 7
years. Their family has grown and now it's too small for them so it's
sitting once again. Anyway, it cost him $4k to get it back on the road
in Bakersfield. The amount of money depends on how fancy you want to
get.

I all depends on what is or is not wrong with it. A few years back we picked up a coach in a Worcester, Mass. junk yard for $999. We worked on it for about 2 hours in an AutoZone parking lot and drove it to Indianapolis. It had lots of minor things wrong with it (including almost every light bulb out) but it drove well and other than peeling the tread off of one tire we had no problems in about 950 miles.

Many say "You get what you pay for." I prefer to say "You do not get what you do not pay for." Understand the difference?
Anyway:
I recommend that a new buyer look at as many coaches as they can. (Both for sale and others.) So they learn what is available and get a better idea of what they are getting themselves into. Believe it or not, not everyone is cut out for ownership of a 35 year old house on top of a 35 year old hotrod!
I believe that the GMC is the best buy in motorhomes but no motorhome is cheap to own and operate.
But to your question: Only you can answer the question if the coach is worth "restoring."
In today’s market, the price of used coaches is depressed but the cost of parts and labor is still fairly high. That translates into the cost of “restoring” is still there, but the value (and cost) of a restored coach is fairly low. (Not good for us owners, but good for someone looking for a coach.)
It is a buyer’s market.
For the most part: I cannot see buying a low end unit if you can find and afford a good “rolling coach.” That is a coach that has been used fairly recently and is more likely to have been maintained. Records are nice to prove the coach has not been neglected. In the long run a “rolling coach” is more likely to be cheaper than a bargain coach.
I understand you are from the northeast. (Prior posting.) I would be very careful about frame rust on coaches in your area. This is a very expensive repair. This caution applies to all coaches, even the nice ones.
If you still want a “bargain”….
On the low end of the scale, the major cost of acquiring a GMC is the transportation to your home/shop/storage area. It might be cheaper over all to buy a coach that can be driven over one that has to be towed. The farther the distance, the more important this is. Shipping of 12,000lbs can be expensive!
Once you have decided that you really should be looking for a "drivable coach," You might want to consider if paying a little more for a "useable" coach would be worth it. I am not saying the coach needs to be pretty or even very well equipped. But there isn't much price difference between something that goes and stops, and something that is a little worn and maybe a bit dusty, but is complete and useable. (Granted my idea of “useable” may not match others ideas of the same word.) The advantage is you can use the coach a bit before you sink to much [more] money into it. You might have some different ideas before you commit to changes. Make it safe, reliable, and useable THEN customize it and make it pretty.

IN June of this year we bought a 77 GMC on EBAY - sight unseen. I tried to
get someone GMC'rs in the Chicago area to look at it prior to the Ebay
closing time but no one responded that they could. We went ahead anyway -
closed the deal. Flew into Chicago, picked up by the seller (he was a
reseller and not the coaches user) THe coach was much like the photo's and
description. I had asked about the age of the tires but never got an
answer. When we looked at the date on the tires - they were from 2000. so
more than 11 years old - looked like brand new though. We got in started
it up and headed to Steve Southworths. Steve helped me install the Brake
Booster and the Alternator Link. Then the 2500 mile journey to White Rock
BC. IN South Dakota it wouldn't start - reulting from a fried cable to the
starter. Changed tires in Souix Falls. Rained and discovered all the roof
caulking was failing - cleaned it out and redid it - off road in Wyoming.
No more leaks. Rest of trip without problems. The guy had records of
repairs going back to 1990. Found that most the improvements were done in
1990 - 1991. Then some work in 2000 - 2001. Records showed mileage so
from 2001 to 2011 it had less than 3500 miles recorded. So for most of the
past 10 years it sat unused.
Now I am going thru it to make sure everything is OK. Just changed the
compressor.
Going to build a ramp system to enable getting under it to check out the
entire underside.
