Okay, was talking about my concept of a simple dash design with Greg Birch (shameless name drop) at the GMC of Western states rally this past weekend when he offered up an idea which if possible I would like to implement in my new dash. We were discussing instrumentation and a simple flat dash panel and I mentioned that I planned on installing individual gauges in bullet pods on the dash. The problem I forsaw was laying them out so they were easily visible and having room for added instrumentation as the need came up. Greg suggested some form of touch screen where the operator could scroll through different gauge readings and even switch to a monitor for back up camera and movie watching. When not in use(camping or parked) the display could be folded closed like a lap top computer. So my questions are these.
1. Is such a touch screen currently available?
2. Is there a way to interface with a touch screen with the speedo/tach/etc?
3. If so, who do I contact?
Thanks,

You have touched on a very complex topic here.
It is possible to obtain sensors to read cirtually anything.
Analog to digital boards for example are available for connection to computer systems.
These boards can read various things, depends on what you want to do..
Then its down to software, i believe you can get software to work in conjunction with various existing boards. This might be a cheaper solution.....
Being an EX computer programmer i can tell you writing that from scratch would be very time consuming and therefore VERY expensive.
If enough people got togeather with the expertise needed it is possible to come up with a system tailored to the GMC....
Might be better to use/modify an existing system....
Just my thoughts on this topic.

Sully,
Since the EBL has that 8 channel A/D converter, the biggest problem is that
only fuel pressure and A/F ratio can be displayed in real time based on
those inputs. Since he already has most of the code, it may be possible to
get BobR to offer the option of reassigning some of the un-used by us, or
less important, displays to such parameters as oil pressure and H2O temp.
I've sent him at least one message with that suggestion -- but gotten no
answers.

Hello,
Not an expert on EBL etc but noticed this :-
Just looking at the web page and noticed
EBL P4 Flash System :-
This has support for oil and other stuff, perhaps that would be workable ??

Seems like a no brainer to me to have those options Ken. It would be pretty sweet to at least have the bare essentials like fuel level, oil pressure, odometer, trip meter. But I don't know how complicated that would be. I'm not a computer guy.

This:
http://www.chetcodigital.com/index-Automotive.htm
is what I'm planning. Talked to them at some length at SEMA
last month, and they've got just about everything it takes.
If you're looking for inexpensive, make other plans.
I was going with MKN Electronics in UK, but they seem to
have gone TU. They had a 32-channel system, completely
programmable and customizable for all gauges. Just a superb
system. Around $1800 for complete system with senders,
software and CPU/screen. Chetco's is around $2500 and is
expandable to the limits of your craving for information.

I've been researching the same thing for my gauges, keep me posted. Something
like this is my thought, but purchasing this system is pricey !
How can a guy make something like this ???

Greetings:
I know this will probably be a very big “filter”, but….
* If you are interested in a ‘glass cockpit’
* Are comfortable working with computers
* And have a basic understanding of BASIC (C or Assembly work as well)
It is not that hard to “Roll Your Own”!
I will try to keep this short and to the point – Mostly so as to not put too many of you to sleep (LoL) – If there is any interest, PM me and I will bore you in excruciating detail
For my own Glass Cockpit Display project, I will be using a combination of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004/X (to provide the basic “seed” instruments) and a utility application called FS Panel Studio that allows you to create your own custom cockpit display panels from all the instruments available in MSFS.
In order to “communicate” with, and control, the instruments in MSFS, there is a Windows Driver called FSUIPC (Peter Dowson) that allows simple BASIC programs full access to all the MSFS input/control.
I found, and became familiar with, FSUIPC when I was working on a feasibility study to see if some Frasca flight simulators could be updated with a LOW cost visual system – As part of my job also involved building Data Acquisition Systems, and the “display” software was always expensive, I thought HAY, I can use this combination rather than buy expensive display software for my own use.
And for analog/digital conversion, I have found the modules from DGH Corp (though similar modules are available from many other companies) easy to work and available on EBay at discounted prices.
But in the end….
It may turn all out to be the “Heath Kit” syndrome! – It would have been cheaper to buy it already made.
But where’s the fun in that!
Anyway, if there is any additional interest – PM me.

Right...that's what I started to do two or three years ago.
I determined that I could put it all on either a BASIC STAMP
or use the 8080 in my old Sinclair ZX81 that I built back in
'80 or '81 (Even dusted off the old assembly language
reference books). But, during my research into DAq systems,
and the proper components to make it all work in my design,
I stumbled on the MKN system. Yup, all packaged and pretty
with warranty and all that, and purpose-designed.
There are lots of digital instrument panels available, but
most, if not all, of them use the CANbus protocol(s) and/or
OBD-II already embedded in the vehicle. Chetco's system uses
its own CANbus-compatible backbone and is adaptable to
wireless operation.

I looked into some of that. Wasn't aware of latest versions
of FS (stopped messing with it when I stopped flying).

Consider yourself PM'd :-) I'll send PM later.
My current interest in such things is an active windshield
(AW). I saw another advancement in automotive HUD systems at
SEMA, and talked to the company showing it. But their plate
is full with their projection HUD, and weren't interested in
developing an active windshield. I think LOF or Corning has
some infant AW technology, but I suspect it's pretty spendy.
Thanks for the links.

There are several options out there, but they all require a computer, usually running windows. The LAST thing I want in my vehicle is ANY Microsoft product. "Were sorry, but windows is experiencing an error and must shut down YOUR ENGINE and restart."
HANG ON!!!!!
I have my own ideas about a micro controller centric universal glass cockpit product for cars (not aircraft), but not the $1M I need to develop it, just all the hardware and software guys that need to be paid to work.
One Idea is an interface box that you tie all the sensors to (Choose Ford, GM, or Mopar) and plug that into an Ipad. or similar (less expensive) touchpad device.

Ardunio or parallax propeller for computer. Plenty of a/d and d/a inputs/outputs available for use. Amazing amount of stuff and sensors to try. Available touch screen color display. I'm interested, hardware easy software hard.

I am not that keen on the idea of reaching over/around the wheel to reach a touchscreen mounted in the normal place for gauges.
My thoughts where to use a regular flat screen for the "dash display" but have a touch screen off to the side to control the system. Something like this USB touchscreen display:
<http://www.amazon.com/MIMO-UM-710S-Powered-Swivel-Display/dp/B002RMPASG/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1323309938&sr=1-10>
<http://tinyurl.com/75tjy5e>
With some of the hardware available today, I agree with most that the major cost would be in the software. (I USED to program quite a bit.... but that was before USB and the interfaces used today.)
