Looking to purchase a Tow Dolly. Any ideas on brands good or bad? I really would like to get surge brakes instead of electric and not have to disconnect power to the brakes to tow it empty. Any comments on brakes? Anybody selling?
Thanks for the input.

Ted,

I bought a "Tow Master" car dolly at a car show about 8-9 years ago. Works
great. At the show they had the standard and a larger HD model. The HD
model allows for a wider track to be towed. It has no brakes but I believe
brakes were an option. I'll see if I can find some paperwork on it. At
the time I was towing it behind a 5.4 liter Ford F150 with a 9,900 lb
towing capacity.

There was a guy in G'ville across from Lowe's who had a bunch of them.  I rented one off him a while back.  I'll look when I go by there in a day or three.

Looking to purchase a Tow Dolly. Any ideas on brands good or bad? >>CLIP<< Any comments on brakes?

I bought a used Kar Kaddy some years ago from the folks across the street. They were RVers from a long time back and towards the time I bought the Dolly from them, they had become full timers.

The Kar Kaddy can get parts anytime, is well built, and the wheels will steer. Most Dollys have fixed wheels, I am not sure if this means anything to you, it tends to keep the turns under control and follow better, I think.

I have never had a problem with this unit and it is relatively easy to load/secure the car and vise versa.

Mine did not come with brakes, I have the after market that utilizes the cars brakes. It would be easier if you can get the brakes on the dolly.

The Dolly is upwards of 10+ years old now and still giving great service and has helped with towing some side jobs around as well.

I recommend the KarKaddy or look for some of its features on what you do look seriously at. Car Dollys are not created equal and there is a big difference in build.

If you have any questions we can chat sometime if you like.

I had one which I used to transport cars from a dealership to my shop for repair. It had a floating deck on it. Don't know if it was defective or what but sometimes in a tight turn (usually while backing) the deck would pivot and the dolly fenders would touch the car on the dolly.

Common problem especially for 96 wide units. That is also aggravated if you do not secure the steering wheel.

Oh I did not mention, the Kar Kaddy is not supposed to be backed up, for the obvious reasons this gentleman mentioned.

I have never been successful in backing up any kind of a tow dolly--at least with a vehicle on it. To me, it's one of the biggest downsides of a tow dolly esp if you don't plan ahead.

Kar Kaddy is the best and usually the most expensive.

NEVER try backing a tow dolly unless (1) it is empty (2) the wheels are locked in place and (3) you have some Hitching rods to put on the dolly(magnetic) to see where the ends of the dolly are as you back it. You must have all three but best not to back it, period.

If no brakes, electric brakes are the easiest to install and the least expensive. Need a brake controller inside the tow vehicle.
I believe somes states require trailer brakes.

I bought a used Kar Kaddy in 2011 for $700 without brakes, but with a spare tire and tie downs. Having a spare for the tow dolly is critical to me. Also, pay attention to the make and age of the tires. Tires on my enclosed trailer did not last three years with little usage-very cheap. I recently bought Good Year trailer tires for that trailer from Diacount Tire at a cost of $489 for four mounted, balanced and disposal of the old tires.

Also, do not forget to have the wheel bearings checked before you first use it.........Michael at GEMRECS

We have the Kar Kaddy with the surge brakes when we want to tow the 04
Scion xB. It works great and helps with the braking. The only thing I
don't like about tow dollys is when it's raining or wet and you have
to get on the ground to hook up the safety chains when loading up or
taking the car off of the tow dolly. That just sucks. I've had to back
mine up a couple of feet a couple of times. Wouldn't want to go
further than that.

I had to back up early one morning on a deserted road to make a turn I passed. WIth the Kar Kaddie, you are not advised to back up and that is a good warning.

I only had to back up about 20 feet so I very slowly and as straight as possible, backed her up so I could make the turn.

I would say, its not impossible but not practical to back up unless there is absolutely no traffic and you have a lot of time.
