Well, since I have one bag with an apparent slow leak, and
this Markbag(tm) system seems to retain man features of the
original system at quite a reasonable cost, I'd surely be
interested in being able to get the pieces "ready made" and
ready to install fairly simply!

Am I far off in thinking this might be a fairly simple job
if the necessary parts were available in a D-I-Y kit?

It is easier than changing a tire on the coach in my opinion.
Inflate bag or lift under bogie mount to height of about 15"(under grease fitting)
Support under bogie
Deflate bag
Remove air line and brass adapter
Remove bag
Install plates on new bag
Install brass fill adapter
Install bag
Instal air line and you are done

Man, I sure hope that some enterprising soul
will find a way to put a kit together for it
and make some money out of it for himself! I
foresee a large market for it!

Sully,

Here's another vote of interest.....

Our bags are OE configuration, holding air LK, but they are looking pretty ragged. Really like the fact you have nearly full travel and your comment about the ease of installation (that's a real biggy for those of us with a whole bunch of thumbs...)

Are the bags readily available if needed?

I'd buy one or two when one of my bags fail (I expect that is not far in the future).

I completed the painting of the mounting plates and uploaded some more photos.

https://picasaweb.google.com/101830499689447875497/Airbag?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCPOV7ObcpLPMiwE&feat=directlink

I also was able to come up with cost info for those who may be interested. For one set (one airbag) the cost would be $220. That includes
Fill side mounting plate
Cone side mounting plate
Hardware for assembling bag to plate(fill port mount uses one of the oem original bag mount nuts) and hardware to hold bag to bogies
Descaled and painted. If you buy a complete set(set up for two bags) You can practically name your color but for individual bags color will be flat or gloss black to avoid paint waste.

If you wish to powder coat or paint the plates yourself the cost would be $175 per set (one airbag)

Bolts are 3/4" grade 5 coarse. All existing plumbing transfers directly over to new bag. One of the original airbag nuts and star washer needs to be used on the fill port. If you do not have one let me know and I can scrounge some up.

The bags themselves can be purchased on line and shipped directly to you. I paid $138 each for the two I bought. There is no real price break for ordering a quantity and depending upon where you are it may be much cheaper to ship from a distributor near you.

I would need two weeks lead time for build and paint. One week for build and send bare. I don't know what shipping costs would be but if there is interest I will research it further. One pair of plates(one airbag) and hardware weighs about 15 lbs.

I would like to add that I cannot give any kind of ride comparison of this bag system to the oem bag as far as ride charictaristics but the lifting range is very close (see earlier post for comparison upper and lower heights). I am planning on going to Ferndale this weekend and hope to throw the set I have on a coach there and have someone with a lot of miles on a functioning original bag system give some feedback.

I believe that this may be suitable replacement for those who want to keep the original system design and not upgrade to a Quadra Bag or Leigh Harrison Four Bag.

Let me know what you think.

When you are ready to start production, I will take two sets (need to do both sides of my GMC) unpainted. Can prepay if necessary.

The one that is similar would be the "BOB" from Jim Bounds. Same high
and low range and only 30# of air at normal ride height. Still under
development.

I would like to add that I cannot give any kind of ride comparison of this bag system to the oem bag as far as ride characteristics but the lifting range is very close (see earlier post for comparison upper and lower heights).

I hate to do this but I also have been pricing the components and have a retired professional fabricator (and friend) looking at making these.

He is also looking at an option of making them out of stainless rather than painting them. The price on stainless is probably prohibitive.

The thought was to offer them with or without the air bag included. Honestly other than the first couple he was just going to drop ship the bags separate from the brackets to save on shipping. UPS will NOT be used so you will not get stuck in the rear for shipping and Canada would not have the extra brokerage fees. UPS rates are going up even higher on Jan 1. Air bags offered would be your choice of Air-Tech or Firestone. Air Tech is few bucks cheaper.

We are looking at the same price point so there would not be any real competition. He was initially thinking about fabricating 10 or 12 sets. Once he sets up the machine to cut the circles it is a simple job to run as many sets as he wants.

On the painting we thought about using cold galvanize or aircraft Zinc-Chromate with a top coat of black or silver. Our powder coat oven in not working right now so we would have to send them to another shop down the street if powder coating is desired.

We have not contacted Mark yet for permission to copy his design. These would not be made without his permission. There is a big difference between building something for yourself and offering something for sale.

Since there is already an offer here to make them, we may back out on this project. I'll see my fabricator tomorrow night at "Two Wheel Tuesday" and discuss it.

Let's see how this goes. I do not want to start a bidding war on these. There probably is not enough market for two vendors to make these.

We were going to adopt a go slow approach until several sets have been installed and a few thousand miles recorded on them and we see what the feedback is on them. We have already seen one failure on a two bag replacement system. We do not need another.

Sully,

I went to the web page of Air Spring Store and did a search for the
*FIRESTONE* W01-358-9294 / W013589294 air bag is $128 plus shipping but if
you go to their Ebay site they are $118 and free shipping and cheaper yet
if buying 4 or more bags.

With "Money Pit" already having a slow leak on the port side airbag system,
I'm definitely in the market for doing it once and forgetting about it!

Cold, or even hot dip, galvanizing would seem to be the best way to go.

I also was able to come up with cost info for those who may be interested.
For one set (one airbag) the cost would be $220. That includes:

Fill side mounting plate
Cone side mounting plate
Hardware for assembling bag to plate(fill port mount uses one of
the oem original bag mount nuts) and hardware to hold bag to bogies

Descaled and painted.

If you buy a complete set (set up for two bags) you can practically
name your color but for individual bags color will be flat or gloss
black to avoid paint waste.

I would like to add that I cannot give any kind of ride comparison of this bag system to the oem bag as far as ride characteristics but the lifting range is very close (see earlier post for comparison upper and lower heights).

Ken,

I had planned on building a set of these from the moment I first saw them posted by Mark. In his initial posting he declared that he had no intenion of manufacturing the brackets for sale and offered the concept and design drawings to the public for reproduction. I discovered as I built them that there was a problem with air line clearance to the rearward tire when in full down and that the air line and fitting sat directly in the debris field of the tire. I made a design change to the mounting standoff in three aspects to accomodate the necessary relocation of the fill port. I also discovered that if the disc was made larger, the bag and cone would be effectively protected by the plate in the event of a tire blow out. I believe my current prototype to be superior in function and design to the original. I don't believe that Marks approval is required legally to build and sell these things based on the above facts although he did just give me his blessing in a private message. He stated that he had hoped someone would produce them because he feels the same as me that it would be a benefit to the GMC community. I felt referring to them as "The Markbag" would be a tribute to his discovery. Obviously I would need to obtain his blessing in order to use his name but I think it fitting.

That being said I do not wish to cause trouble. I have been transparent about my feelings about this system and my plans regarding it as all of my thoughts were published as my current design was crafted from mock up to finished product. I also stated my ambition to possibly have the parts produced. I have taken my prototype to a small metal fabricator in my business community and from his figures and my costs I arrived at the cost I had published earlier.

The mention of hot dip galvanizing got me thinking so I did some research and it turns out I can have them galvanized for less than it costs me to paint them so if any are interested I can supply the hot dip galvanized plates for probably $200.

I believe Ken is correct in his thought that stainless would be cost prohibitive as it would raise the cost of the set to about $280 per set or $560 for two airbags(not including the bags)

Mark put his idea out there for all of us to use and improve as we saw fit in the hopes that a refined product would be readily available at a reasonable cost for every GMCr. There is nothing out there stopping any of you from building one of these yourselves. I am a fairly capable fabricator and experienced welder but I found building the plates and standoffs by hand to be rather tedious. I also believe that the tools and skills required to build these are not possessed by all who might desire them on their coach

I will have a completed set with me at Ferndale this weekend which I would like someone with original bags and system to road test strictly for a ride comparison.

If you have questions or comments and do not wish to air them on the forum, send me a PM.
