Matt,
Since you live in both the GMC and Marine worlds please give us your opinion of this product:

Chuck Botts reports good results for engine compartment noise.

I am replacing the carpet in my living area with pergo type flooring and am concerned about the increased noise level.

I am considering applying Silent Running to the plywood floor before installing the foam underlayment and pergo.

Do you think it would be effective in this application?

Do you or anyone else reading this have suggestions for noise suppression with hard surface floor installations in the GMC?

Thanks for all suggestions.

I installed a Pergo floor in my coach last summer and have driven more than 12K miles with it and noise is not a problem. I/we have not noticed any noise increase from the carpeting that was in there before. I did use the foam cushion that is recommended under it and find it is warm and quiet - no problems. I have photos on the photos site starting at:

I plan to refinish the cockpit floor with Pergo also and am considering using the Silent Running stuff on the inside of the firewall and the sides when I do. Or, I may use some of that roofing material that was mentioned recently here too.

Gene,
I pulled up all the carpet in the living area of our GMC and replaced it
with Pergo. Zero increase in noise or resonance. I used the foam underlay
as recommended by Pergo.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Gene,

As you seem to have guessed, I have wrestled with this on a few occasions, the one thing that proved out with the sound-down mat (lead loaded vinyl) was that it had to be on the noise-maker side of plywood or fiberglass to be as effective as it costs. It seems that once you let the bulkhead/panel/enclosure vibrate, you then have more to stop. It was still an improvement on the outside, but in one case, I had the opportunity to relocate the mat (at the owner's expense) and it was accepted by those present as an improvement - no instruments were available.

My guess would be (just my guess based on experience like above) that this would help as an undercarpet layer, but would be more of an improvement on the engine side. Almost any foam mat will be an improvement if it is put on the top, but again, once you get the panel vibrating, you have more energy to handle.

That is all my personal opinion on the subject and you are welcome to all the free advice for the usual fee.

Matt
