So soon after our FischenDog passed. I am so sorry to hear this. He was such a sweetheart. I got to get off this computer and go have a good long cry now.

We have an airport dog named Mamie. She outlived her owner and lived at the airport after that. She lived in a heated hangar with her own bed, food, and water. Every morning one pilot would walk her. Then around noon another pilot would take her walking again. The owner of the hangar would take care of her during the rest of the day and put her away for the evening. Mamie has a couple of places she stayed during day, usually out on the grass (weather permitting) and had free run of the area. About 3 months ago one of the pilots with three daughters adopted her. He frequently brings her back and Mamie immediately assumes her airport dog duties while they are there. She recently returned for a week while her new owners were out of town.
Thanks everyone for your comments on Jasper. Laurie and I appreciate it.
Many GMCers knew him and some of the things he did at the rallies. Things like playing the Bush Beans Dog or refusing to fetch the ball more than once. His attitude was "I went and got it once and you threw it away again, so now you go get it".
Once he sat in a Rally Seminar on his own while Laurie and I were elsewhere. I could not figure how he got in the room but a lady later told me "He was waiting at the door so I opened it for him." After the seminar, someone brought him back to the coach. I had not latched the door and he knew that Laurie had gone to that room. Unfortunately she left using a different door before he arrived.
At another rally he sat in on a Bingo game.
Jasper was good friends with Blaine and Diane and enjoyed watching Blaine's table on Vendors Row at many rallies.
Thanks again everyone for your thoughts.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my great Yellow Lab and best friend about 18
months ago.
Dogs are just the best companions. Certainly missed when they are gone.

We all love the animals, for whatever reasons. Some enjoy watching them at play while others enjoy the company they keep.
Duke was fabulous on the Bush Beans commercial, always bringing a smile to me, did he ever really sell that secret recepie?? I am saddened to know that he won't be on the commercials again. My heart goes out to all that feel the loss.
I have enjoyed 5 members of the Greyhound breed.
Gatsby was my first, and best. Rojo I lost recently and I miss them very much. I now have Seven, Blazer and RUBY, the youngest and wildest of the three.
Cherish the wonderful memories and he will be with us always.
So sorry for the sad news.

For the first 5 days Jasper was in the hospital Clyde was lost. They went everywhere together. On Jasper's last day we took Clyde with us to see Jasper. After Clyde saw Jasper he stopped looking for him at home and returned to normal. I think he realized Jasper was dieing.
Clyde is also dieing with cancer and has 3 to 6 months to live. He feels fine with the meds he is on but the vet says the effectiveness of the meds will cease in about 90 days. We are considering chemo which may extend his life for a year. We need to make a decision in the next week or so.
Thanks for the thought Kerry.

We have to remember. Our dogs live in the Now, they don't anticipate - beyond mealtime anyway - and they don't dwell on the past. Consequently, it is encumbent upon us who keep and love them to recognize this set of affairs and act accordingly. If my boy is happy riding with me in the GMC, he will ride with me, and if I know I must decide on his survival in a short time, I can't let that affect him. We will enjoy the ride and wherever it leads us. He and his littermates came into this life from my decision. Part of that decsion was acceptance of responsibility for them throught this life, and the responsibility when that life no longer has any quality, to Send them on their way. We're all aware of that responsibility, and although we don't dwell on it, we carry it out when we must. Enjoy the time you have just as Clyde does, without concern for the future. He will tell you when it's time to do otherwise.

The problem we have is Jasper died last week at 11. He did not survive his intestine cancer surgery. Jasper's chances were never good.
Now it is Clyde and he is only 7. Clyde is headed to Purdue University Oncology department sometime next week for an evaluation. Since he is younger and his cancer is not advanced, we are probably going to try to extend his life span. He has the symptoms but they have not been able to find the source of the cancer. I have had several Goldens and they all lived to about 15.
The local vets (three of them) all think he is good candidate for treatment. I'll know more Monday when the Purdue Oncology department calls me. Just like in people, they have made a lot of advances in treating animals with cancer.
We are gong to give it a shot. If we fail, at least we can say to ourselves that we made the effort.
Thanks for your thoughts.

That's the move. I didn't mean ignore treatment - I hope you didn't take it that way. We potentially faced the same decision with our eldest until the biopsy came back benign. We had to decide up front on surgery so she would only be anesthetized once... had the biopsy been malignant, the surgeon was authorized to cut. The reasoning - The potential gain was a year or more of comfortable life in a 14 y/o dog after resecting a liver tumor. Easy choice. As is yours once you get the options.
And for those GMCers whose vets offer DNA testing and/or banking, and other testing for inclusion in various databases, DO IT! Current ongoing research is advancing vet merdicine as quickly as human in many areas, cancer and inherited conditions being in the forefront. Pay it forward!

Really sorry to hear that Kerry. I remember back in 2004 we awoke in a
park in Titusville, FL., to see a nice looking GMC parked next to us. A
jolly fellow soon appeared with a cute, fluffy, tiny puppy that the couple
had named Google. We hope Googles last days are his best.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a nation where every citizen must prove they have
health insurance......but not everyone has to prove they're a citizen.

This is such a sad topic, I hope I don't upset anyeone.
I have had 2 dogs with cancer, Osteo Sarcoma, and one with a heart disorder.
Gatsby, with the heart disorder went fast. His heart burst and sealed his fate. Emergency kept him alive long enough for me to say good bye.
Wrinkles and Rojo, my latest, had the Osteo Sarcoma. With Wrinkles being the first of my experiences with this terrible cancer, we always grasp for the best and look for a fix. The doctors are very wary of telling you much fearing being sued so they tell you only what they think is safe to tell you. You have to ask some very well thought out questions to get the facts straight.
Wrinkles, was given radiation treatments that gave him another 9 months, but the cancer came back. The doctors knew, but I was hopeful since the visual cancer had gone away.... Wrink was a good ole boy.
Rojo was a sweet young girl. She developed a limp, local vet would not touch it and the specialist found the cancer - Osteo Sarcoma. I knew this time there was nothing that could be done. I tried anything I could that could help her but time never stops as we sometimes wish it could. Her life was rather short but it was time for her to go.
I agree that they live in the NOW, hearing that bisquit box rattle and they come running, the keys jingle and they are at the door. When sickness occurs I believe the owners take on the burdon of worry and hope for the best.. Our pets just live through the pain and enjoy life when it is gone.
People view pets differently. Some see them as a friend, some as companions and others as family. The closeness we develop for these pets is as individual as the owner is. I treat them like my kids and it takes a long time after one leaves, for me to start to get back to normal. I still miss them.
I feel your loss and I hope you have much better results with the other one. We are but caretakers for these fun frisky characters but sometimes, they are called early....
I hope all turns out better for you.

Thanks for your thoughts.
I loose a dog every 5 to 7 years but this time they both were ill at the same time.
The Oncology dept at Purdue "thinks" Clyde does not have Lymphoma but another cancer that does not spread quickly. The problem is they are not sure and are having another doctor review all of the the test results and the biopsy results. They took 4 of them on Wednesday. I expected to hear from them today and did not. I'll have to call them on Monday.
I have been very impressed with their operation so far.
