Hello out there, i have parts of the dash broken, and i want to repair it. I have looked for photos showing how the whole thing comes apart but no joy. I notice that the lower part is riveted into the frame. Do you have to remove these rivets to dismantle ???

Steve & Bruce,
Most of the plasticizer has been baked out of that old plastic so it's very
brittle. Here's a photo of the underside of the assembly. It's hard to
know where to stop, so don't look at the following photos.

Steve,
The dash has fasteners on the bottom and on top next to the windshield. The side panels have fastener on the floor, on top, in the rear under the wall panel, and 2 ea. in the front ( remove glove box and reach through the glove box and feel for those ).
The side panel need to move back to give space to the dash to come out. Removal of one or both of the side panel makes it much easier to move the dash out.
The big trick is removing the top screws at the windshield, without removing the windshields. The screws are vertical, but the glass is not, and the screws are most likely rusted in.
Do all the insulating and sealing while you can, the fire wall, floor to wall, gas fill tube to floor to eliminate air infiltration and noise reduction.
I plastic welded the dash cracks and covered with pleather.
I don't think the dash fastening of a 77 is too much different then a 75.

That is a great photo essay of Ken's beautiful new dash.
But doesn't answer the question of how the orginal comes apart.
I also have to do that soon.
Thanks

I'll admit my first response to this thread was somewhat facetious. But
not entirely. My real answer is: DON'T plan to re-install a removed OEM
dash. After having removed mine, I'm more convinced than ever that it's
easier to build a replacement from scratch than to replace it. Not only
will repairing the damage to the OEM unit be a real pain, it will leave
most of the original design shortcomings in place.
My album may not show it, but the ad hoc design, fabrication, and
installation of the new dash wasn't really a big job. Most of the sheet
metal folds were made using a 40 year old 18" Japanese bench brake for
which I probably paid $9.95. Only a couple of pieces were longer and
required the machine shop's brake -- I could have done those with some
boards and C-clamps.
Now if you don't like the rectilinear designs of most DIY dashes and want
something nearly original, consider Frank Jenkins' fiberglass copy of the
OEM dash. At least it provides a solid platform to begin with.

Ken I totally agree. I'm going to build custom no frills dash with gauges top mounted in individual pods. I have a decent complete dash pulled from a parts coach just for reference to build the new one. It is so brittle everywhere you could go on and on trying to repair it all. The ducting for dash air is the only thing worth saving I think. But the ducting uses the underside of the dash to complete the top of defroster ducting. If everything is functioning in your dash but the top is ugly, I would explore cosmetic remedys that leave the dash in place. By the time u pull it and re-instal it it will be in worse shape than if you had left it alone
