The guy I have been consulting for my interior owns a company in seattle called soundtec. He specializes in luxury marine applications and deals with all types of sound control from generator and engine mounts to bulkheads and walls in everything from commercial cruise liners to private yachts. Among the top things he said to avoid if you want to keep cabin noise down is hard surfaces. One thing he told me that stuck was of a sound problem a manufacturer was having under a fly bridge. The noise under the bridge was intrusive to the point that the stereo was hard to hear when at cruise. The problem was finally solved when the underside of the fly bridge was upholstered with a foam backed vinyl headliner. He said to avoid any hard surface that you can because the sound will rebound and even amplify off of those surfaces. You can't avoid it on the counters/cabinets/glass( we got lotts of glass in our coaches) but the roof panels/furniture and flooring should be soft on as many
faces as possible. He sells a product line from a company called soundown. Look them up on the web and find a distributor/installer. He came to my house and looked at the whole project and had a situation specific solution to the gen compartment/floor in the living area etc. The products are not terribly expensive if you are guided to the best performer by someone in the know

While I am replacing the carpet in the cockpit I plan to remove all the carpet in the living area and install a floating floor of either vinyl or quality laminate. I expect that either will be much noisier than the old carpet and pad.
Is there anything (at a reasonable cost) to be placed under the laminate or vinyl flooring to mitigate the noise.
Would the paint product that Chuck Botts used be effective if it is applied to the top of the floor rather than under the floor
Any body have any suggestions for quietening the living area when hard surface flooring is installed?
