Hello Everyone, i'm new to the forums and the gmc motorhome, i recently acquired one (couple months ago) it's a 1974 26's painted desert model.
I researched and fell in love with the design of these.

I wanted a project coach that i will have to rebuild from the ground up, this will probably take me years to do as it's simply in a rv storage place atm while i tear out the interior and look for a better place to work on it.

David,

That's quite an ambitious plan you are undertaking. I thought I saw another Motorhome in the background, so I'll guess that you already love the Motorhome experience.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and the coach you are working on? Where are you and how do you plan to use the finished coach? Then again, there are plenty who get as much satisfaction working on these beauties as they do traveling in them!

Thanks,

Dear ljdavick

that was a picture at the seller's place, i wish that motorhome in the background was mine as well lol, it's a extremely fancy one

I'm 32 years old male located in simi valley, ca

it's a 1974 26's painted desert, i'm not sure how many owners it's had or where it's been the person i bought it from had it in fresno, ca.

i plan on working on this for a couple years so i don't really have a date when i'll be done, as for what i'll use it for not sure yet, i'd love to just travel abroad, expessily if i get my power from the sun and live green the only thing i'll have in expenses gas/propane for the generator/stove/heaters and of course food/clothes.

Today i cleaned up the coach and took some more pictures of me taking apart the interior

also the lower hinge on the door is breaking or rather should say the door frame is, not sure yet if i'm going to attempt to repair the door or simply buy a used one

David,
Thanks for posting the pictures as you are gutting it. As a new owner myself its interesting to see how everything is routed. Good luck with your project.

Galen

P.S. I hope those firebirds are the last to go! My friends keep asking me what kind of air brush mural I am going to add to mine. Smile

Welcome to both of you new guys. This is the place to learn everything about your coaches. If you set the coach up like I did you won't really need a generator, unless you want to run the air. If I need air its time to move.

Welcome to the group Dave, you're going to meet some incredible people out here
and you're going to have a blast working on the coach. If we can help in any
way, just ask.

Hello Everyone, i'm new to the forums and the gmc motorhome, i recently acquired

I wanted a project coach that i will have to rebuild from the ground up, this
will probably take me years to do as it's simply in a rv storage place atm while
i tear out the interior and look for a better place to work on it.

I'm still working on ripping more of the interior out, i've got the shower and
heater out sense those pictures.

I just wanted to make this thread as a way to track what i'm doing and ideals
and hear from others what they think, this again is a project that i figure will
take me years to complete lol :)

Some upgrade Ideals i have
though the bumper hitch (i plan on possibly towing a 22-26' enclosed trailer)
max brake system
rims and tires (last thing i do as the current tires are new)
Air bad system
brake system (disc, power booster)
chuck aulgar reaction bar
raise the frame for larger tanks / batteries (rougly 3")
Headlights, taillights, clearance lights (LED)
Central Vacuum system
Tank-less water heater (propane / 120v)
Custom lighting
Microwave mounted about stove
flip up tv mounted over passenger seat
Light on retractable cord mounted in refrigerator maintenance door
Custom Dashboard
New windows
Ev conversion (electric motors)
Solar panels (remove rear ladder)
Place generator in front (where the radiator would had been)
replace all appliances
Redo all plumbing and electrical wiring (romex wiring and hard copper plumbing)
Remove dashboard a/c and heater (due to ev conversion)
Remove 2nd gas tank leave 1 tank (for generator to use dual fuel sources

Sounds like a great project!!
One item you stated was to Redo all plumbing and electrical wiring (romex
wiring and hard copper plumbing), I thought that I read in the forum or
elsewhere that you don't want to hard copper plumb as road vibrations might
work the connections loose. I leave it up to the experts here to commit on
that.

Thank you very much, that is a excellent point, i didn't even think about that when i thought i'd redo it in hard copper, the soft copper probably gives more so the vibration doesn't affect it like hard would plus the compression fittings would hold better, and possibly easier to work with. that will be the way to go then Smile
(updated main post to reflect that)

Thanks David

Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car, understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Hp is how fast you hit the wall, and torque is how far you take the wall with you when you hit it.

David,

I would suggest PEX piping and fittings to replace the original copper.

Welcome aboard and congratulations on the project coach.

Hello Everyone, i'm new to the forums and the gmc motorhome, i recently acquired one (couple months ago) it's a 1974 26's painted desert model.
I researched and fell in love with the design of these.

I wanted a project coach ...

I have a few "project coaches."

It is good to see people younger than the coach being interested in these rigs. Something to note (and is way too late for you and this coach) is the number of new buyers that start redoing everything, only to find out they have bit of more than they can chew. I have seen many end up being sold after the owner looses interest. It is sad to see.

Another problem is a new owner quickly making changes only to find out the changes were not that good of an idea.

I hope you do not fall to either of these problems. To avoid the loss of motivation you can find local GMC'ers and get to know them. You might want to visit any rallies you can. (Yes, you CAN attend rallies without a coach.) Even stopping by for a few hours would be better than nothing.

Learning from others experiences and seeing others USING their coaches can save YOU much time, effort and MONEY... plus keep your motivation up.

Of course you could find a USABLE coach to use while you upgrade your current coach.... Twisted Evil

I sure hope i don't get tired of working on it, i doubt i will as i only have a day or two i get to even work on it, only on my days off of work, till i find a better place to work on it.

Also is there a upgrade for the front end suspension ? i read in another fourm post but didn't quite understand, i would be interested as i'm doing a conversion to ev i would want the front end to be able to support more weight if possible?

There is a one ton front end conversion (Hubler front end)that is gaining popularity as the parts are more robust and availability of parts should be better in the future.

Definitely take lots of pictures as you go, and don't hesitate to ask questions as you go. It's best to learn and not repeat other's mistakes as you proceed.

Welcome to the group!

I have always been interested in EV and Hybrid vehicles. I believe that is the future for effectively meeting our overall transportation needs. I would be interested what you are planning for the GMC. There are some large vehicle applications that work but are costly. Just wondering about your thinking process?
