Looking at Armands link to the GMCWS blog -- and the article on Chuck Garton's instrumentation ...

http://gmcws.org/blog/?p=505

Amazing array -- and I love the toggle switches -- of course my favorite "Seat release".

Reading into the article -- some interesting observations on Duracool vs R12.

I am not sure that that observation is entirely correct.
We don't know what amount of charge of Duracool he was using.
I have been getting lower temperatures than he indicates for Duracool at 95 deg or more ambient temperatures.
It might be interesting to have Chuck bleed off a little bit of Duracool and recheck his temperatures.
I suspect that he has a bit too high of a charge.

Emery,

You are our most expert in this area and I was hoping you might comment.
I was impressed that Chuck had the instrumentaion on board to watch such events. Perhaps many of you do -- I had just not seen before.

Thanks,
Dennis

The other thing I did not like was his statement that Dino oil starts to break down at 230 degrees.

What is he running for oil? Water?

It sounds more like boiling point of water under a few PSI of pressure. I think he needs to research that statement a little more.

I like the instrumentation but it is a little too much for me.

A little research on the Internet would show that oil begins to carbonize at about 250 to 300 degrees Centrigrade.

I wonder if he looked up something and missed that is was C instead of F?

Chuck is a very knowledgeable guy I spoke with him at length when I was a Pacific Cruiser. He makes a good point for using Synthetic oil. My oil gets that hot also on long mountain grades in warm weather and I also have the aluminum radiator but I use the internal cooler and an external oil cooler also.

The seat release operates a door lock solenoid to let the seat rotate.
The seats were made for a Beaver MH that I picked up in Eugene, OR.
They are a little too wide and I couldn't get my hand between the wall
and the seat to operate the lever. I also have to run the seat all the
way forward before it will rotate. The seats are 6 way power and very
comfortable.

I tried duracool at many different pressures and found that it would
work as described, or the temperature of the evaporator would increase
with higher or lower pressure (Low Side).

A work buddy of mine just inherited a 1984 Blluebird Wanderlodge. Compared
to that, Chuck's instrument panel looks like a row of idiot lights in an
economy car.

It really is a nice bit of work but even though I'm an engineer, I prefer lights and a buzzer to keep me informed. My nav unit alone is enough to get me in trouble on the highway Smile
