My Tom Tom 630 is a Piece of Crap. I have had an older Tom Tom for years, just got a new one that has bluetooth for hands free It had a touchscreen problem right out of the box. I spent weeks trying to resolve it with senseless reloading of software, etc. per tech support and they finally sent me a new one (I had to pay postage to send old one back) and again, the thing still does the same things. It's really fun when it calls the cops... Don't buy one of these. Apple, Are you listening? give me an I-NAV!!!!

Their tech support actually bricked someones unit and then just laughed. The damn thing is Brittish after all, must have been assembled by lucas.

Can the English make anything electrical that works properly?

Yes, you just have to plug it into 220V. That should fix it.

Actually, aren't there apps already available for the iPads that take the place of all the Tom Toms and Garmins?

I got some for my kids, and still like looking at maps myself, but I wouldn't mind getting an app for my iPad if anyone has a recommendation.

Hi
I have been using the Navigon app for the iPhone/iPad and find it works great but it does lag sometimes in the big cities with highrise buildings around. I got it when it was on sale all north America for 49$

Yeah, the iphone and ipad apps are not up to real time navigation...yet. I also hesitate to leave a $700 ipad stuck to the dash, though it would be nice.

I have my ipad2 mounted in my truck and coach.

Easy to pull out and put out of sight. (mount was $50)

That huge display screen (compared to car GPS) is a 1000% better for my 'older eyes'.

There are a number of GPS/map programs which are free and work
well with the ipad. Try 'GPS-R', 'Waze', 'TeleNav' or 'Google Maps'.

ipad is expensive but if you factor in the money saved by not
buying a standard GPS (and having internet, email, thousands of free apps
available) it is almost affordable!

By the way I also use a couple of phone programs to place free calls
(all 50 states) which work great on ipad. Look at Talkatone, Google Voice, Line2
etc. These also work on your iphone.

Chris,
Don't you like working with positive ground?

When I used to have to work on Pye equipment, I found it easier to understand the schematics by holding them upside-down and reading them using a mirror!

That ($50) was about what I paid for my Tom Tom XL... with mount.

Haven't had it that long but I am happy with it.

It was one of those "sale a day" things... factory reconditioned.

I got mine at Amazon, this one requires no hole drilling.

http://www.amazon.com/RAM-B-316-1-AP8-Universal-No-Drill-Vehicle-Mount/dp/B004309FL8/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1321591634&sr=1- 6

You can likely find a cheaper one.

Have you seen others you like?

Dan, I bought a RAM mount for my iPad from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042HJOOA/ref=oh_o02_s00_i00_details

Suction cup mounts to my Mac dash just fine! $38 and change.

Thanks Terry. I see them on ebay much less expensive. Now, are you using any kind of gps program with your's? I realize Streets and Trips can't be loaded but I sure wish it could. I love that program more than any GPS I have had. I have 5 windshield units. Streets and Trips is so easy to use.

I believe that the iPads with 3G include the GPS chip, whereas the WiFi only iPads do not. I would guess that this makes a difference.

Beware of the no-name ones on eBay, they are junk. As to software, I have Navigon, co-Pilot Live and am just trying waze. co-Pilot Live is the best so far.

Also remember, only the 3G iPads have GPS. The WiFi only ones do not have GPS built in.

Thanks Terry. Since we use the mobile router we dont need a 3 g Ipad. Guess wont need the mount. That was only reason I could see that I would need it. A 10 inch GPS screen would be cool.
