Today I bagan prepping some used aluminum cones to replace the plastic ones on my 73. One cone had an obvious and somewhat rough casting margin just inside the opening of the cone.
Has anyone seen this before -- how concerned would you be about it?

I thought perhaps just smoothing it down would be sufficient.

Thanks,
Dennis

Dennis,

It probably doesn't matter but knowing the perfectionist you are I'd take a Dremel tool with a round sanding bands or flap wheel and
remove it.

Probably wouldn't take more than a few minutes to do it.

Rob,

Yes, I think I will remove it -- I had the Dremel out last night, but thought I would post first. Some of the scratches and blemishes on the cone required a file, then 400 wet sanding followed by 2000.

Dennis

Dennis, maybe when you get done polishing your air bag cones, you can clean
the inner fenders with a dental inspection mirror and a toothbrush. <Grin>
You must be much younger than I am or a whole lot less busy. I barely have
time to make sure the torque is correct on my tire valve stem caps. If I
ever had all the projects on my GMC done to the point where I might consider
polishing my cones with 2000 grit, I know that Rapture is right around the
corner. But all this good natured joshing brings home an important point.
What you do with your GMC doesn't have to float my boat, only yours. That is
the wonderful part of this hobby. The labor we each invest on our hobbies
only has to make sense to each of us individually, not collectively. Think
of all the pleasure that non GMC owners are missing out on. Enjoy your coach
any way you want. All in fun.

I am awed. I have done frame off restorations on a number of automobiles,
the last one being a 1961 Cadillac Coupe de Ville short roof. Took me two
years nearly full time. It was a show winner, but not a lot of fun to drive.
I was constantly concerned about rock chips, scratches, rain, birds, idiots
with studs on the pockets of their jeans & on and on. Have a lot more fun
with my mechanically sound but cosmetically challenged GMC. I admire your
attention to detail. I know how much effort it is. Thanks for sharing.

I note from the "cathy-ron" website that they had
many other pics on a hard drive that crashed.

Many times, much, if not most, of the DATA filed
on a failed drive can be recovered by most any
competent technician. Frequently the areas of the
failed hard drive are only those that are involved
with computer start up and most data is unharmed.
I went through this some time ago and almost all
of my data was taken from the failed hard drive
and loaded up to the replacement drive. Since then
I have bought the necessary minimal hardware to
add my OLD hard drive as an additional drive and
I find that virtually all of my data is still there.

I don't know how to contact "cathy-ron" but maybe
they will see this and be able to have their pics
recovered!

Jim,

While I admire viewing frame off restorations (and am impressed at the skills involved), I have an increasing fondness for unrestored originals -- from nice old drivers to rusty buckets.

Whenever I remove a part from the GMC, I try to at least clean it as well as possible -- but prefer to clean and paint before replacing. Most of the work is done at the mini-storage lot -- except for small projects I can bring home and complete in the driveway.

In the case of the air bag cones, I was struck at the number of casting faults and blemishes -- so it started off as a practical effort to have clean working surfaces. With the cessation of production of OEM bags and the higher cost of existing stock, I want to ensure my NOS replacements last a long time.

Jim,
I'm with you on this, I had a 63 Corvette where I spent a few bucks for a
magnificent paint job and some chrome and interior work - no new 63 Vette
ever looked this good. Made me real nervous driving it on the Wisconsin and
Minnesota roads, so I sold it on auction for 10 times more than I paid for
it. Today It wouldn't be worth so much due to road wear, Seems to fit for
the GMC RV.group and their coaches, Should we spend more on cosmetics or on
function? I vote on function, but does that count?
