I made a twitter account called "GMCfeed"
I am only slightly less ignorant than most others who commented on my previous post. Everything I know about it I figured out in the last hour.
I think it works like this; to shotgun a message out to the group each individual would have to create a twitter account for themselves and then choose to FOLLOW (subscribe) to the GMCfeed account.
To send a message they would need to send it as "GMCfeed"
The password for this account is 1974eleganza (marsha's coach)
I don't really expect this idea to reach critical mass.

Stuck in the learning curve. Created a twitter account, searched for GMCfeed, found hundreds of accounts with GMC in them, amazing variety of to me worthless drivel, didn't find "GMCfeed." Did find "GMCfeeds" with tag line "biboy dequina." Didn't sound like you...

If we are looking for an emergency notification network, Twitter isn't it.
I could not cull out important stuff from all the crap that comes across my twitter feed.
Yeah, it's for politicians, and people who don't do things IRL.
So, I'm the exception (sort of)

There are a couple of services I would recommend.
Rainedout.com is SMS (text messages) only.
Simplifiedalerts.com does it all but costs
Why don't we set up another list, something like GMCBreakdown. Those who want email just put in their email. Those who want text, put in the gateway (sending mail to 7403125342@mobile.att.com will send me a text message your carrier has a gateway too).
It's no cost, uses existing technology, and is easy to get going.
If you want carrier pigeon, I'm still working on it.

Listed alphabetically:
1) Black List
2) GMCnet
3) Jim B
4) Jim K
From what I've observed since 2007 they seem to work pretty well.

There was a lot of discussion here about using Twitter as a notification service.
That's not workable.
I believe the intent was to put up a net for the Black List. It makes perfect sense.
One message that hits the entire black list immediately. Not a lot of traffic, and easy to handle.
Brings people who don't follow this list (or get it in digest mode) to participate.
Get's the important stuff out of the noise.

Am I to understand that a system has been or is going to be setup that every member of the Black List is going to be sent a message
anytime anyone anywhere reports an emergency?

Face it, keeping with a paper black list is more than little archaic. Phoning around is not very efficient, either.
Heck, there is not even a searchable PDF for the black list, or password protected online access.
So, yes, you are to understand that there are options that require something more than a buggy whip.

Understood, you've just provided information as to what could be done.
Normally the GMCer with the problem uses the Black List to call GMC owners that are close by for help.
Actually you can download an Excel version of the Black List and that is searchable.

You do have a good point about password protecting it as anyone can download the info on it.

In addition the Black list web page has a search for help near a city and a zoom out shows every one nearby.
And that feature is also available in the excellent files set up for MS Streets and Trips.

All well and good. Rather 21st century, too. However, I don't want to get
involved in something where abuse of the system could be easily done. It
seems what is being put forth is a self-managing system. Some type of
alert system would be nice but it would need an authoritative
administrator (in my opinion) that wouldn't mind to keep things under
control. There's also CoachNet, AAA, and the others. Most GMCers don't
keep a tow truck in the driveway, too. Gas can and tools, yes.
The suggestion of a GMC-Breakdown list where a member could receive email
or text-on-phone is a good one. It would take some time to get it built up
but could be worth a try if managed correctly.

Most established organizations or associations struggle with how to use the
recent social cloud based tools in conjunction with or as replacement for
their current tools. The key point to remember about Twitter, Facebook,
Google+, Wikipedia, etc. is that they excel at "anonymous collaboration".
They are built to draw broader audiences but also resources and contribution
from that audience. They are not good at reinforcing established
hierarchies but rather for generating new ones.
Not surprisingly, organizations founded based on physical interaction...
with membership dues and physical meetings (rallies) as their business model
are going to find these tools foreign to their expectations. It doesn't
mean they are bad tools just that they are not suited to attempts to
maintain a closed system. This is where you will see frustrated comments
about openness allowing in "undesirables".
As for Twitter for an alert for GMC emergency assistance, it would depend on
a substantial audience paying attention to Twitter feeds to make it useful.
And even then, Twitter is good for when you want to get the message out to a
large, diverse group over the next 48-72 hours, but it is not good if you
want to get the message out to a group in the next hour. The technology
delivers the message immediately, but even avid twitterers view it a few
times a day. Where twitter works is when there is massive attention to a
topic... natural disasters, terror acts, global politics, etc... where
re-tweeting overcomes the reader lag and pulls communities together really
quickly but then they disassemble just as quickly.
Many GMCers were actually early adopters of the web as a collaboration
tool. We have one of the best, established web presences around. If
however, we were starting from scratch today, most of the tools used and
implementations in use would not be the best choice... Some current day
alternatives that might be chosen if we didn't already have a start:
GMCNet Forum: Facebook Group
BlackList: Google Spreadsheet shared with contributors
Parts interchange and gmcmotorhomeinfo.com: Hosted wiki
Jim and Jim Corporate Social Presence: Facebook company pages (that we all
"like")
Jim's Daily Pose: Facebook posts with twitter references

Twitter has 175 million accounts (half US population), about 1.5 million are
very active (less than 1% US population)
Facebook: 800 million active, 400 million log in every day (more than the US
population)
Wikipedia: The entire contents of wikipedia, over 1 billion edits, 4
million articles could be created with less than 1% of US prime time TV
commercial watching EVERY YEAR.
Flickr: 51 million registered users, 80 million unique visitors, 6 billion
images
Youtube: 300 million users, 100 million videos, 200,000 uploaded every day.
This GMC community can drag it's feet participating here but likely at it's
own peril.

What a great post-
Twitter may not be the right tool for an instant notification system but there has to be something out there that would be useful.
We all have cell phones, right? And even if we never use text our cell phones have the capability.
Most cell numbers can text to and from email-
For instance, verizon is yourcellnumber@vtext.com
I use it all the time. It's easier to email a shopping list straight to my phone than it is to locate a pen and paper.
That might be one way- I would be happy to host a mailing list.
