Can anyone advise us of a good website or guides for finding rv parks/campgrounds, and does anyone know of any in Chicago, ideally central, thanks!

You ask a good question to which there is not good answer. I did see a
motorhome parked at a Walmart in Schaumburg for several days when I was in
there for training at Motorola three years ago. It was surprising for me to
see since I was always near the Walmart before 7 PM.

I've looked for a campground not to far from the center of the city and have
found none. There is a KOA on the north side but it's only open seasonally.
Personally, I don't consider being 50 miles out as being "close".

I don't think you'll find any RV parks around Chicago as it's too crowded and the land is too expensive. There might be RV parking at the casinos (a new one, Rivers Casino, just opened in Des Plaines, IL close to O'Hare Airport), or in northwest Indiana.

Hopefully someone else may be able to chime in with some other suggestions.

I found a campground in Elgin, IL. A little closer..

"Within Burnidge Forest Preserve is Paul Wolff
Campground<http://kaneforest.com/publications/brochures/camping.pdf>.
The campground contains 89 improved, vehicle camp sites with 50-amp
electrical service, water access, parking pad and fire ring. Improved camp
sites are available to vehicles or tent campers. Each improved site is
capable of handling a 50-foot motorhome."

Arrived in the dark, left at dawn. Train tracks near, no showers, one
central flush bathroom, several pit toilets. Level & paved. May1 to Oct. 31

Also you have Horseshoe Casino in Hammond (right on the Illinois state line) , Ameristar Casio in East Chicago. I have never been to either Casio so I can nto tell you what their facilities are like.

Indiana Dunes State Park would be a good location lots of people stay there it the summer.

There are lots of Walmarts around in Indiana. Portage and Valparaiso Indian would be two quiet ones.

Be careful using the toll roads around Chicago or bring lots of money.

Too bad you got on this so late.
The Walmart works, but there are better.
There is actually an RV on the east side of the Museum of Science and Industry If your read their site and look at the pictures on Google Earth (great parking lot finder in the sky) you can see where it is. We have hold up there a couple of times and not been bothered at all.

If you want to be outside of Chicago. Another really nice place is the lot at the Cabela's in Hammond IN. It is a sort haul to the city from there and only one toll.

Great news that is too late - Huh?

Try give us a little more lead time for your next stop.

Are you carrying Street Atlas or Trips and Streets? If you are, I have some things you have got to do...

John-Paul,

Stop at any RV dealer and you'll find Woodalls and Trailer Life campground
directories which list most of the campgrounds in the US, with brief
descriptions of the facilities, hookups, and prices. They're 1-1/2" thick
volumes indexed by state and city, with maps labelled with locations; pretty
convenient for use in unfamiliar areas. I haven't check the current one for
several years so I can't advise which I think better.

I am sure I am too late but Joliet has a casino and a campground. There is also one between joliet and Chicago on I 80. Kindof a back to basics place, but it exists.
Further north, there is one between Waukegan and Zion called Illnois beach, there is a hotel as well.

There is another camping area West by the Chain of lakes, called the Chain of lakes state park.

These are all North of Chicago, probably too far for you but a thought.

This is why the data base that Byron is asking for input on is such a valuable tool for us travelers.

Yes, Anything to bring the money in.

My daughter currently works in the marketing dept. of a casino. They have an area where they park RV's. I have never check it out.

JP and Miriam, hope you are doing well. Tell Miriam I like her CD and have been listening in the Jeep. Too bad it was so dark, rainny, cold and windy when you droped by. We could have done a quick once over safety inspection, greased everthing and checked front end parts if the sun was out. Is that house battery charging/holding? wondering if you checked the electrolite levels and connections to see if that would make it happier.

P.S. Do most Casinos allow camping?
JP Winger

In the past, some of the casinos, if not all would allow you to park on the asphalt parking area. Some would ask no over night parking but would not bother you if you stayed.

Some have upgraded to a paved parking area, with or without water/power and a dump station, some with dump on site.

In recent years there has been a lot of building and a realization that if people can afford campers, they can afford to gamble. It is not uncommon to see camping sites on casino properties now. This may be a good thing with Wall marts being forced to ask overnighters to leave due to local law enforcement attitudes.

Some of the new casino sites are very nice and the casinos have great dinners.

My Thoughts
