Reading John Shotwell's tale reminds me of my experience on the way back to Santa Fe after my last trip.
We were stopping at Autozones trying to find old stock of an alternator belt. The last one I stopped at was in Joliet, IL. NOT a good neighborhood to shop in!
They had the 11 mm belt that I needed and I was in their parking lot laying under my GMC putting on the belt when three police cars pulled into the parking lot at high speed and parked blocking the front door. They entered the store with their guns drawn.

I hurried up in tightening the last bolt on the alternator and then got into my motorhome and put on the engine cover and got the heck out of the parking lot.

On the street within four blocks I saw another five police cars heading toward Autozone.

I didn't stick around long enough to find out what had happened but I assume that there was a robbery attempt right after I left the store.

Emery, Not a bad story but certainly does not compare to John's. Laughing

No, it was nothing like John's experience but it sure had me nervous.

Well, I can not deny that Emery is one of the best story tellers I know. Aug 2010 was a funny one that I recall well.

Emery's story is a good one. I have been robbed at auto parts stores but not at gun point but over the counter. I get robbed worse at the dealer.

I bought a used E320 4matic wagon for almost nothing and still couldn't give it back to the original dealer where it was bought, certified used, and had a bible ($20K plus) of in house repairs since 2002. Never believe these cars hold value. It was a nice 60K car new, I got it for 2K! and got out at $3750 doing a detail. I also changed the oil (all 9 qts syn) and even the WIX filter is like $18 w discount and it's just the paper element part, no can! YIKES. Robbery! Glad you "missed" the direct action Emery!
OBTW. Next time ask a Chicagoan about where not to stop around here.
