the compressor in our first coach is on it's last legs. Is it best to
replace with another GMC compressor or is there
a better alternative that is an easy swap?

Dwane,

I replaced my old Dana (GMC) compressor with a Viair 350-C that I got from Jim B. Here's a link to the photo album I did when I replaced it:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5506

I like it just fine. It's quiet and it fills the system fairly quickly. I'm reluctant to mention this, but you can get them for less $$ at other web sites. I just choose to support our vendors whenever possible (as long as I don't feel like I'm getting screwed).

Jim K has several options on his site as well, including rebuilt Danas. Rebuild kits for the Dana, Firestone, and Viair:

http://www.appliedgmc.com/level.itml/icOid/478

Scroll down to find the compressors.

I installed the Viair 350; the 450 is better choice. You can also clean up the installation by mounting it above the tank on curbside. Be sure to use the recommended switch and mount the intake filter where it won't possibly get wet.

G'day,

Good advice.

I mounted the air intake filter under the drivers side hood above the hinge line in the upper right hand corner as far up as I could
get it. It's right next to the horn.

In case you're thinking that you could mount the filter inside the coach up under the dash forget it. I tried that and the noise
drove me nuts!

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob, I mounted the Viair 350-C filter inside, under the dash, and I can't hear any noise from it. It's not that I'm deaf either. My hearing is surprisingly good for a guy that has spent nearly 40 years in construction! Rolling Eyes

I also wired it through a 30 amp fuse and relay, with 10g wire feeding the compressor.

I did the same as Carl S. (below) With no noise problem. PO had installed
filter outside and direct to a switch, I moved the filter inside and added a
30 amp fused relay.

Carl,

I should have advised that I installed a Viair 480C, which was the highest capacity model at the time. That may be why it drove me
nuts. But I am pretty close to that state normally! ;-)

It's wired through a 40amp relay.

The location of the compressor (DANA) on both of my 77 coaches are in the
rear under the bed.
(would be fine if it vibrated the bed but doesn't)
and would think the place I would install new compressors.

I looked at the pics Carl posted and liked the idea of having it set up to
act as a tire pump.
The original Dana didn't come with a auxillary filter and if I go with
another brand that has the filter
I would think I have to mount that in a place allowing for sufficient air
flow to it.

For all abiding in the US - today was the Official Thanksgiving Day in
Canada - and had lots of
hot turkey (enjoy a well cooked neck) stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, fall
vegi's and finished with
pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

Happy Thanksgiving. - truly we have a lot to be thankful for. on the List

I have started planning an Across Canada and return through the States
rolling rally starting in
August 2012 from White Rock BC ( 3 day rally) Interested in joining in part

+1 on the relay and circuit breaker idea. I have mine wired through an illuminated on-off-on switch to run from house or chassis battery, or not at all.

Dolph,

I used the filter that came with the compressor. The kit came with three of them, and a hose. IIRC, the instructions said to mount it inside. I had the same concern with that as Rob had but, I guess the smaller compressor made a lot less noise.

Correction to the above: After looking at Rob's link, I remembered that I used the remote mount filter. It came with three elements, not three filters. Only one filter.

a PO had installed a Viair 250 which is not a good choice. it's not continuous duty and has lower output volume.

I am going with the Viair 450 from Jim K. - replacing the compressors in
both Coaches.

I have the 2 Original compressors ( one works OK but not great, the other
needs to be rebuilt) Maybe Jim wants them for rebuilds???

My wife and I used the Kingsley on the weekend to camp at Harrison Hot

Dwayne,

I have used the Viair 450c compressor the last 14 months with my wireless
air system. The compressor works great. You should like it with your
system too.
