Question for those of you who have been there last year - what is the
easiest way to get to Treasure Island when coming from the north? Through
Oakland or San Francisco? Thinking Oakland would be less traffic and hills.

Thanks,

Bert and Fay Curtis

Ughh... San Francisco is bad enough in a rental car. It and Boston are the last two places on earth I'd want to drive my GMC.

Curtis,
If you are coming down from HWY 5, I would take 505 to 80.
It will get you to the Bay Bridge and Treasure Island.
It's freeway driving (and bridge toll on the Bay Bridge).

Coming down 101 can be more complicated. If you take
the Golden Gate bridge, you go through San Francisco
city streets. GPS would help a lot.

Another alternative if you're coming down 101 is to
take HWY 37 from Novato to Vallejo and then across
the Carquinez Bridge(no toll) to HWY 80. HWY 80 take you to the Bay Bridge.
The Treasure Island exit is on the left side midway across the bridge.

Happy Travels,
Bill

DO NOT come from Oakland unless you want to pay several dollar toll.
Go through San Francisco, but if you need to cross the Golden gate,
your going to pay either way.

The toll from the North on the Golden Gate is $13 now! Come from Oakland, it's "only" $10.50!

There's 17 coaches here now.

There is a lot intimidating about driving your GMC in many locations and
I've driven through many of them and haven't hit anybody - yet!
Just came back from the Bay area after doing Desmond's T I Rally.
You can add Oakland's freeway system to the freeways to avoid.
We ended up in Marin County north of San Francisco, and getting advice from
the KOA in Larkspur, we decided to drive through San Francisco to get to
Santa Cruz and points South.
By the way, while not a "resort" RV park, it is neat and clean and
accessible by walking a short distance to the ferry terminal where you can
catch the new, modern, high speed ferry to San Francisco, 30 minutes, the
transit system will take you anywhere you want to go in S F.
First, if you can, anywhere up there for the toll bridges, get one of the
Fastrack transponders, you might even pay less than if you are paying cash -
so convenient, just hold it up at the booth and you are paid.
From Marin County, we took 101 south, the Golden Gate Bridge and once
across, took Hwy 1 thru San Francisco to I-280. Not nearly as scary as the
Oakland freeways.
Back to the Desmond's T I Rally, what a great experience, put it on your
"bucket list". As a retired Navy pilot, I have seen many airport "air
shows", they pretty much drive up and down the flight line, but the S F bay
area has spectators along the shore areas throughout much of the bay, T I
being a popular spot with great sight lines. The "Blues" flew very low
directly over T I, just overwhelming noise, thrilling beyond belief, single
planes, 4, 5 and 6 planes, tight formations, great skill, beautiful planes,
the F-18's.
Once over the center of the bay, one of the single planes pulled straight
up, went supersonic and boomed the sky, You could feel it a little bit on
the ground. On aircraft carrier air show at sea, they used to "boom" us
directly on purpose.
Thanks again - Desmond
Regards, Gene 76 Eleganza, North County San Diego
