I just did some horse trading, and ended up getting a fantastic fan for my 75 palm beach.

The plan of course is to replace the original fan located up front, with the fantastic fan.

is this a bolt in, or does one have to do some creative cutting and trimming?

just wondering because if it is going to take alot of creativity, I will wait to install it. but if it is simple, I will try to get it done soon. But my schedule is always tough, so I do not want to pull the old one out, and run out of time before i get the new one in place.

I see alot of information on installing a fan in the bathroom. but have not seem pictures of the procedure for the front fan replacement.

There is some cutting of the roof and ceiling. The OEM fan holes have rounded corners and they need to be squared to get the fantastic fan in. I used a jig saw and a tsquare and it was a very simple job for the roof and a tsquare and a razor blade for the oem headliner. Putting in a fantastic fan is a pretty simple job...

I have a '76 and if I recall correctly there was no cutting of anything required to swap the FF for the OEM fan for the fan up front.

On my 74, no cutting required, Holes will not match up so you will need to
drill new holes. Edge of the new fan will cover the old holes. By far the
biggest problem I had was getting through the old silicone to get to
the screw heads, second was stripped screws. I just drilled them out. Whole
thing took maybe three hours. Would have went faster if I had someone to
gofer all the stuff I needed, but didn't take up on the roof of the coach
with me. Cleaning the old silicone off the roof can be a issue too.

On my 75 Palm Beach, I just had to trim up the corners to fit the Fantastic Fan in the front hole.

You'll love the fan once installed, they really are nice.

No cutting to the roof required on my 1973 for the back vent. I did have to trim the inside plastic trim piece (supplied with the fan) to the proper depth of the roof. I was in a borrowed driveway with limited tools, but fortunately it doesn't have to be pretty -- the cut edge will be hidden.

I haven't done the front vent yet because I'm not sure how hard it will be to find/pull 12V there. The original just has the crankup lid, no fan, and cursory exploration hasn't revealed any wires just hanging about waiting for a powered upgrade.

My headliner, unlike so many other things, is in perfect condition, so I'm not anxious to pull it out to hunt for wires quite yet.

[edit: fix autocorrected-mangled spelling of "supplied". Apologies for the offensive correction.]

You should be able to find a 12 volt source along the upper rail on the driver's side, though that can be a chore if you have cabinets installed in that area. Perhaps tapping 12 volts from the reading light feed on the bottom of the cabinet would be another possibility. Obviously, this is much easier if the headliner is removed!

If your old vent needs replacing, you could always install the Fantastic fan and just use it as a vent until you get around to powering it.

Another way to do this is to install a roof air at this location and put the fan in the vent by the door. This has several advantages, in my case there is no engine driven AC, so we can run the Onan to power the roof air while underway. Very small mileage penalty, and better circulation when parked.

I'm thinking I saw a solar powered fan, maybe a marine type of catalog. Two types, one is for ventilation when in storage. The other allowed light to come in and had a battery for evening operation.

I know for fact that the unit for use when in storage is sold, it is silver with a solar panel in the middle of the top. The other I am thinking I saw it but I can't tell you where to find it.

maybe something along those lines might be helpful. I'm thinking the vents are all trending toward solar anyway.

G'day,

I know the folks at Fantastic Fan are terrific but Maxx Fan makes this fan and I reckon it's mo better:

http://www.maxxair.com/maxxfan-remote-control.html

You can leave it open and on in a rainstorm!

Rob M.

I know it has been said allot here, and I know these are nice fans and you
are not criticizing fantastic, you just like the other fan better, but when
a company stands behind their products (fantastic recently replaced a 18
year old fan for me..... not parts, the whole fan. When I told them I had no
idea it was that old, they told me they knew because it had one of the
original knobs that they bought from Radio Shack on it, and they stopped
using that knob 18 years ago.) I will do my best to support them. This
happened after they were bought. Just had to say that. :) On the on the
power note, my 74 did not have power in the front whole.

They sell a cover that looks like that, it fits over the Fantastik vent fan. You can leave the Fantastic fan cover open and the cover keeps the rain out. Fantastic makes a fan that will close if it starts to rain. They have one with a thermostat and variable fan speed also and REMOTE CONTROL.... lolol

I agree, the Fantastic people back their product like no other. No one can compete with their service. I will only buy the fantastic fans.

Richard,

Fantastic Fan sent a replacement dome for one of the ones in The Blue Streak all the way to Australia for free too.

However, that didn't stop me from buying the Maxx Fans.

The fact that the Maxx Fan can be left open in a rainstorm was the deciding factor for me.

I can GA-RON-TEE you that if Fantastic Fan made one like the Maxx Fan I'd have bought theirs in a heartbeat even it cost WAY more!

Regards,
Rob M.

Larry,

You are 100% correct, however, I vaguely remember reading if you cover a Fantastic Fan with one of those covers (made by MaxAir) you
void the warranty.

To make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot I sent an email to Fantastic Fan asking that question.

I will post the response.

Regards,
Rob M.

I did not see anything about voiding the warranty, but at the bottom of the
operating instructions it says:

" NOTE: Fan-Tastic Vent does not recommend placing a vent cover over, or
using a
foam filter on your Fan-Tastic Vent. This greatly restricts airflow,
causing
accumulation of dust and increased sound levels."

The Fantastic fan with the remote is themmostatically controlled, it also will sense rain and close. you do not need to put that cover over that fantastic vent fan.

I also have a manual vent with a cover over it. I forgot to close them and when Winter arrived, snow got into the coach, and when it began to melt, it dripped inside.

I don't recommend leaving it open if storing over winter for those reasons.
