Rob,

JP and his family should be back on the road again!
JP repaired the air leak in the tubing.
The air compressor he has attached to the engine (Quick Rise System) had been working until it locked up and they had to cut the belt.
The original GMC compressor wasn't working due to a broken cutoff switch (PO installed). That has been corrected so they now onboard air pressure.
The house electrical was only working when the unit was on shore power (PD9145 supplying the house).
House battery wasn't connected to anything and wasn't being charged either (again due to PO rewiring). This has also been corrected.
Isolator is fully functional.
Systems are now working as originally designed but OEM compressor is marginal (gets to 70 psi on pressure monitoing gauge but tire clearances are OK with 4" at top of tire.

Take Care!!

JP,

The OEM air bag compressor on a '73 Canyonlands (or any other GMC) is not engine driven.

Furthermore as far as I know none of the 455 or 403 cubic engines installed in any GMC had an "air injection pump."

As far as I know the only component mounted under the alternator is the power steering pump.

The A/C compressor is mounted on the opposite side of the engine from the alternator.

Make sure that the brass union you have has a tube to insert into the plastic tubing or the tubing could blow out of the union.

If you have the ability to take photographs of the "air injection pump" and the area around it you could send them to me robmueller
at iinet dot net dot au. I will post them to our Photosite so we can help you better! ;-)

You better send in the pictures quickly I don't know if I'll be so helpful if the Warriors beat Manly! ;-)

The Yanks won't get this!

Regards,
Rob M.

Bill,

I'm glad he got hooked up to someone that has some idea how everything is supposed to work.
JP and I only talked for a few minutes and had only figured out a very small portion of his problems - not enough to matter.
I did not get the engine air pump figured out. I though it was an old AIR (or AEC) pump left over.

Hi,

We got away late yesterday and arrived in Waterville, MN (an hour south of Minneapolis) around midnight. We have a cabin so are stretching the legs for a couple of weeks before heading east again to NY and maybe Nashville on the way.

Big thanks to Bill Minor for his great help yesterday, and to you Matt, Dennis Sexton and all the other GMCers that have offered advice and help... and our Aussie mate across the ditch - go the warriors! Learnt tonnes about our home away from home and very grateful.

Pretty much as all as described below, although the orig. air compressor is only putting out about 40psi and running almost continuous with bags in hold so may need to sort out or replace that York aircon compressor still, will at least get a portable emergency one for now.

Also there was a lot of wobble in the steering yesterday but may be because even at the gas station getting the air tank to 90 psi I couldn't raise the bellows and level them any better tan we had yesterday - maybe a leak in the system somewhere. Bags are still holding up though with about 4 inches from wheel rim.

The temp gauge isn't working since we worked on it, not sure why yet. Will need to get myself a voltmeter and some advice I think.

A few other issues I'll query and try to sort when I've got a bit more time on my hands!
Thanks again!

JP - you may want to think about picking up a 12V 150 PSI compressor from Harbor Freight for about $75. It can charge the air system through the schrader valve and also do the tires. I have one and it works well for what I ask it to do.

Glad to hear Bill was able to help you and you were able to get on your way. Call if you're in the area and need help. We're on the black list.

JP,

Do you intend to ship this GMC back to NZ?

If you do please note the TZE number here so John Shotwell (keeps the GMC Registery Database) will change the owner and location.

Thanks Steve,

I ended up getting one from O'Reillys as it was the only one in town, after following all the instructions to the letter, charging fully etc. I trialled it and it burnt out in a few minutes once it got the airtank up to 60 psi so I returned it.

I nearly bought one from Northern Tool yesterday but thought it better to get a recommended one as need one I can trust and their one didn't come with a DC cigarette adapter.

We have run out of air again, strangely the bags have stayed up fine for 3 weeks and then suddenly went down overnight - so have insurance company assistance coming to fill it up and then I'm going to find the nearest Harbour Freight!!! We're in Rapid City, Iowa on our way east and I see there is one nearby.

Do you happen to know if you can charge it off the cigarette lighter/DC as well as AC?? We're not likely to have power the next couple of nights as we're on the road to NYC.

Thanks again!
With regards,

JP

The one I have is shown in this picture and the next several pictures:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=23898

It does not have a cigarette lighter plug, only battery clamps. I ran mine for several tank pump ups and bag cycles in a row and it held up fine. It does not have any electrical charging function. I suspect the one you got from O'Reillys was for automotive use and didn't have the guts needed for GMCMH air bags.

The model I have is no longer listed but the direct replacement appears to be #66399. I think it is important to get one rated for 150PSI.

Bill Minors came up yesterday to observe my front clip pull and we had a some good conversations, including about your GMC.

Good. I spoke to him the AM and he was down. He needed more than my old GMC hubcaps! I can perhaps offer assistance as he passes through this area or at least top him off at the schraders. Sounds like it needs some PO undoing.
