At the Goshen convention I did a presentation on the principles of paint
scheme design. As it turned out, this presentation and the one the
Stuckey's gave had the largest attendance. I'm very appreciative of the
response and the comments that were made on a more personal level.
In preparing for the presentation I came across a photo I had made at
DuQuoin last year. The photo was of a photo that was in Bill's display of
artifacts. This scheme just caught my eye as being outstanding. I've just
uploaded my illustration based on that photo.

As I understand, this coach was displayed at DuQuoin for an FMCA
convention held at DuQuoin in 1974. The scheme is red, white and blue and
was probably developed in the spirit of the impending bi-centennial
observance. If you recall, we started seeing a lot of 200th activities
starting on 1974.

Not yet. I'm still working on the text to accompany the presentation so it
makes sense. When I'm finished I'll put it up at GMCES unless someone
wanting to take the job as webmaster stops me. You can link to it so that,
as I make changes, the freshest version will always be available.
BTW, some minor corrections and a couple of new images will be in the
October version of Bovee's Internet Ididot's Guide.

Byron,
I really like the sweep of paint behind the door glass. It's very 1970's. The white lines coming down from the grille are kind of clunky to me, but the bottom treatment with the different thicknesses is very nice. I wonder how they finished off the rear of the coach?
Still there is something about the sweep of paint from the grille and the sweep over the rear wheels on "The Road Machine" that I think works perfectly. I know our coaches don't need swoopy paint to make them look good, like so many boxes on wheels do, but "The Road Machine" paint scheme seems to be organic!

Byron, I think that your renderings are great. Really causes one to invoke
their thoughts in other directions besides Battery operated GMCs. Just as an
aside, I wonder how Chip Foose would do with a GMC paint job. It would be
really interesting to find out.

Byron, Your rendering is outstanding! Keep those pictures coming. I'm

Here are thoughts in response to multiple posts:
Thanks for the positive comments. And, thanks for the others, too.
GM designers messed with fading and decided distinct striping looked best.
I agree. Fading always looks nice at first but gets old. When it's dirty
it really looks like dirty and that something really faded. On a show car
that polished and never driven, no problem. They are here today and gone
tomorrow. But, for a motorhome you're going to drive, you want a sturdy
design.
As how GMC treated the rear -- from what I recall it rose around the
corner to go over the bumper but not as high as the front.
Keep in mind that this scheme was originally done when it was considered
inappropriate to capture the design of the flag on a vehicle. You Vette
buffs will recall that Chevy looked high and low for a second flag before
deciding on the flags of the original Corvette emblem. So, I think they
decided to make the blue the larger field of color and just implement the
colors of the flag.
It is a striking design. The original coach was not a motorhome. It was a
TZE upfitted to be limousine-like. The side windows forward of the door
were the width of what was in the rear.
The original TZE was probably destroyed, which was the practice at the big
three to "protect" the vehicle.

Byron,
I think that paint scheme is incredible. If the red white and blue is too
much for some then keeping the scheme with different colors would work well
with the shape and lines of the coach. Wish I had seen it sooner as I am
over half way finished with the paint on mine. That scheme would look sweet
with the colors I am using (Black with gold pearl/bronze metallic/coarse
bright silver) Black with gold pearl where the blue is, bronze metallic
where the red is and bright silver(lenticular aluminum flake) where the
white is.

Thanks for the response. I agree with you. The design is striking. Since
we live in a country where we still get to choose a few things, colors are
whatever looks good in your eye. They just have to look good together.
Bill Bryant sent me a photo of that coach from the rear. Amazingly, it
revealed what I didn't imagine. I'll do a rendering from the rear and redo
what I've done to come up with something more like the original than what
I have. By the way, the coach was called Great Gadabout. It had no direct
relationship to the Coca Cola coaches (the blue) but share something just
because of the name.
