Just got my 74 canyonlands and noticed it had p24575r16s instead of what I've being seen recommended of p22575r16s the extra inch heigth does make it tight in the back at the bag T cover, I also feel it could make the tranny work harder. They've been on there for 5 years and plenty of tread but sidewalls dryrotted so I was going to be replacing soon, any input on one brand and size over another.
Also found that both rear drums removed and disc only put on front rear wheels and no parking brake at all, did find a 12vdc linelock in the box that never did get installed. Is it the norm to just put disc on the front rears only?
I've seen these classics for years but until you get one yourself you don't realize how "special" they are, in a good way.

I don't know about the tire size but I am pretty sure that is a common tire size that people use on GMCs. The disc brakes on only the middle wheels is a pretty common upgrade because the rear wheels have little braking power without the reaction arm system installed since the middle wheel braking action lifts the rear.

Some people have "Upgraded" to rear disks on all 4 rear and also some only on the middle two wheels only which is what you have. I can not comment on "upgrade's" its effectiveness as I have never done it.
The correct size tires is 2.25 not 2.45. Some people like Dan Gregg have gone to that 2.45 oversize. I'm not sure why they do it because the standard size is more than adequate. Going oversize does negatively affect the final drive ratio. In Dan's case he replaced the final drive with a different ratio which more than made of for the oversize tires plus some more.
Your speedometer is also off some because of those tires.

You are correct the "standard" size is P225 x 75R - 16. You are correct having the larger tires on the front does decrease the final
drive ratio which in turn makes the engine and tranny work harder.
You will get recommendations for just about every brand available and I'll be the first; I run Kuhmo Road Venture KL-78. To save Ken
Burton some time so does he!
If you decide to get these make sure they are load range D or E. BE CAREFUL as they also have them in a P (passenger car) rating.

Do as Search by Size for 225 x 75 - 16
When it comes up scroll down and when you come to the Load Range selection on the left side of the screen, Delete all then check
Load range E.
When it comes up you can sort by price.

I just like fat tires and skinny women. We have oversized tires on every vehicle we own. Have done this since 1970 when I got my driver's license and first car, which is sitting in my garage now. I like all of the rubber I can get between me and the pavement. My coach came from Tx, back in 04, with the larger tires and I kept putting them on it. They are hard on the thing if you don't swap out the final drive. Mine now has a 370. The fatter tires are more likely to rip out the side of your coach if you have a blow out with the single bags. I changed to the quadra bag. Had to cut a quarter inch from bottoms of rear flares.
Big fat tires, just my preference. I buy 2 new tires every 2 years anyway hoping to not have old tires anywhere on the GMC.
My thinking is, front rear discs are much better than 4 drums in the rear. I did all 4 rear discs, like Armand with the reaction arm. We have serious braking power now.
The GMC is your's. You can run whatever tires and brake you want. Should you be towing a car think about swapping the final drive up to something lower, with larger front tires.
