I've been following recent posts regarding 16" steel wheels and feel like I've come late to the party. I'm surmising that with 16" wheels you must have a better choice of tires than with 16.5", right?

And regarding C Boyd's interesting choice to use a non-dually wheel up front, would a dually style spare be all one would need if you configured your coach as he had?

The main reason people have switched to the 16" wheels is due to the lack of tires being manufactured in the 16 1/2" size anymore. When I checked then Tire Rack web site, the only wheel pictured that fits in the original size is the Firestone Transforce, so the selection is getting mighty thin.

Thanks, that's what I was guessing. My coach had fairly new tires on it when I bought it a few years ago but they're definitely showing signs of age now. Really unfortunate considering I haven't put 500 miles on it.

How about the other part of my question...I like what C. Boyd did with non-dually front wheels and am considering doing the same.

I think C. Boyd can answer that question. I remember reading the results of a test he did using a drop center (stock type) wheel on one side and a standard offset wheel on the other. IIRC, he reported some weird handling issues of some sort.

I am running that type of set-up on my coach, and although I have never tested it, I am confident I would be able to get to a tire shop with mis-matched wheels on the front, if I have to. I also have to carry an extra set of lug nuts, as the Dodge wheels I have on the front use different nuts than the Eagles on the rear.
