I spend a lot of money at Home Depot. I'm not happy that most stuff there comes from China, but I buy it anyway. What choice do I have. I noticed something really disturbing last night:

I witnessed Home Depot Hiring off-duty cops to watch over customers using the self checkouts. (In bad neighborhoods, anyway) So they would rather pay a cop who already has a day job $25-30 per hour to "protect" their assets instead of hiring two cashiers from that bad neighborhood who really need the job and providing full service checkout. How stupid is that? No wonder there are so many people looking for work.

I posted this on their facebook page and it was removed. I posted it again, and it disappeared again very quickly. I'm pissed that Facebook allows that, It seems that corporate customers get to use it for propaganda, but not allow their customers to post their issues. That is really sad. So much for free speech.

I'm going to Lowes exclusively from now on. People need jobs. That cop needs to live within his means. Sorry Home Depot. You cannot seem to stock fences and fence hardware that works together anyway.

/Rant off.

I agree fully.
At A&W I don't put my garbage in the bin. I leave it on the table. They can hire someone to clean up. After all, it is a "restaurant".

I buy from Homer the Despot and Lowe's... but prefer the local hardware.  Which also sells stuff made by the Heathen Chinee.  Fact of life.

I can assure you, the staffing decision was made on a pure money basis.  Two rent-a-cops are cheaper than more chasiers, even with the irritation factoe figured in (and they>do< figure it in).  The instant the cashiers are cheaper, they will appear.

if i am at a store that does self checkout and has cashier, i will wait in line for cashier, i have been known to complain that the machine has no personality .
if only machine check out, i want buy from them. we can take all the jobs away, but then no one has any money to buy the stuff, this is the type of thinking that helped get us where we are now. very sad.

G'day,

I love it when they call you a "guest" then expect you to clean up after yourself!

Here in Sydney quite a few of the McDonalds hire high functioning autistic young adults to clear the tables. It always warms my
heart and makes me happy to see them.

I reckon that Home Depot, Lowes, and any supermarket should hire them to police the aisles and put the little bits and pieces back
where they belong where they belong.

Being the pedantic anally retentive guy of Teutonic descent it drives me nuts when I buy a hand full of nuts bolts, whatever out of
a bin and forget to check and make sure they're all the same only to discover they're not when I get back to the shop an get halfway
through a job!

Regards,
Rob M.

Regarding Facebook;

Don't put in on THEIR page, put it on yours. They can't touch that. The other thing is to use Twitter and the hashtag; #homedepot and or #fail Those are search labels that help people find messages about a certain topic. Sometimes the companies will watch for their own hashtags and respond, but they can't silence the messages.

Those spread around and can't be removed.

My step-daughter was born with Down syndrome. She is now 23. She works at
Outback as a hostess. She opens the door for patrons and takes them to
their table. Once there she says "Welcome to Outback, your server should
be with you shortly." She's there two nights a week for four hours each.
She also works at Best Buys. She rearranges the CDs and DVDs. She's also
to watch for theft. At one store meeting the manager said everyone should
watch their departments as closely as Candice. If they did they wouldn't
loose cameras and laptops. Guess what. On Sunday she's at the front door
watching to be sure everyone has a fresh looking bag and isn't afraid to
call the security person.

I also love buying hardware the old fashioned way. However, those of us
that want low, low prices drove the hardware stores out of business
because we could buy stuff cheaper at the packaged goods places. It isn't
the stores fault for wanting to make a profit. However, I do agree that
two employees at $12 per hour makes more sense than one off-duty cop at
$25. That, folks, is just plain stupid.

Byron

Unfortunately, the hourly wage is only one part of the equation.

To say more would stray into the political.

At a part time low wage level, it is more like 15-20% over the pay rate, so two people at $9-10 per hour (What that pays) two would fit within that $25-30. I'm sure the cop isn't there more than a few hrs in the evenings...

I hate it when the bolt thing happens!!!!

Ranting,

I hate to join this and do want this to stay politically neutral...

Several years ago the big orange box store fired a cashier for wearing an
American flag and a "Support Our Troops" patch on his nice orange work apron
for refusing to take them off.

I wrote both emails and hand written letters to the big orange box store and
copied all my friends that had military service. Even my "X" father-in-law
a WWII veteran of the South Pacific. I have to tell you - 80-90% of the
people I forwarded copies to sent their own letters in.

I never got a response which really ticked me off - but several months
later, I was told that the HD store put up a makeshift 4x8 piece of plywood
thanking our troops and posted pictures of local folks serving in the
military.

I'd like to think my letters had something to do with it - but I'll take the
results just the same. I think of it everytime I go to Lowe's - who buy the
way last year was still saying "Merry Christmas".

Byron,

I've been confusing Downs Syndrome with Autism, thanks for telling us about your step daughter.

Maybe you should teach her to say G'day when she greets customers! ;-)

John Sharpe and I are lucky, there's a True Value Hardware store about half a mile down the road from where we store our GMC's and
they have bins where you can buy whatever number of widgets you want. Even though I only show up for a couple - three months a year
they know me well! Wonder why? ;-)

Regards,
Rob

I have an old school Ace hardware nearby.
I try to buy as much as I can from them.

I avoid wallmart/home depot as much as possible.
But I do like Menards and Lowes

Both Home Depot and Lowe's are among the companies
who offer a 10% discount to active duty and retired
military members. It's also offered to veterans who
can present a copy of their DD Form 214 showing their
service.

Mac,

Does the Depot do that all the time? I went in with friend that had a
retirees USN Id and they said it was only good - at least for retirees on
Memorial Day weekend.

My friend, who is a contractor, prefers the self check-out, as it's faster for him. My experience has been the opposite as every time I try the self check-out I have an item that doesn't scan or doesn't have a barcode on it. Besides I like to flirt with the cashiers. Even the ones my age!

And the ACTUAL additional personnel cost ranges from
somwhere around double the pay rate for those at the
bottom of the pay scale to miniscule for those at the top.
This is a result of FIXED costs for any employee.

Both Home Depot and Lowe's are among the companies
who offer a 10% discount to active duty and retired
military members. It's also offered to veterans who
can present a copy of their DD Form 214 showing their
service.
