i have started my timing chain project, parts are not in so i figured i would get fan clutch and the air duct that surronds it off, so that i may access, fan and surrond are only this off, bets are not even loose yet
i know someone has been here on mine before because some bolts have washers and some dont.
during the process of removing the air shroud piece a spacer hit the floor. it is approx 5/8 wide and 3/8 thick. i can see that it could be used as a spacer if something needed this 3/8 offset for ?
it may not matter, but any thoughts where it may go?
thanks bgk

The only spacer that I am aware of that has that size is a spacer that goes between the angle bracket that fits onto the alternator. It fits on the rear bottom of the bracket where it bolts to the top of the manifold (head?). it is needed there to get the alternator tipped a bit to the front to align the belt properly.

I don't think that there is any spacer on the fan duct.

here are pictures of the spacer and where it goes.

there is also a picture how to fix the alternator when the spacer is lost.

this missing spacer, is the most common reason folks are going to 2
alternator belts. with proper alignment and tension, the single alternator
belt works great - forever;>)

on mine the spacer is on the top pivot bracket where the bracket back and down to the head bolt connects.

that bracket was missing on mine so i made one.

Brian,

Take a look at the Parts Book 78Z Page 6-2 Figure 6.002 Key 20 Bracket, lower venturi ring (RH).

There appears to be what could be called a spacer that goes into that bracket.

If you don't have the Parts Book you can download it here:

http://www.bdub.net/factory-manuals.html

Regards,
Rob M.

the real object here is to make sure the belt is leaving the pulley -
straight out-

to do this, put a straight edge across the diameter of the alternator
pulley, and the belt should be exactly parallel to the straight edge.

If the belt leaves at an angle, you are going to have trouble.

and of course, tension, and belt size as has been noted
