My tire shop is having trouble finding lug nuts. The ones I have are
flat on the surface that touches the rim.
Can I use just any lugnut that physically fits or do they have special
properties I need to be aware of?

Lug centered wheels have a conical shape on one end of the nut. Hub centered wheels have a flat surface on both ends. You really need to match the lug nuts to the surface that they are going to press against.
I haven't followed what you are doing but I assume you are installing some old steel wheels on a coach to move it. If that is what you are doing you probably could get by with a few conical nuts mixed in with a majority of flat hub centered nuts.
If you are working with Eagle or Alcoa aluminum wheels do not try to use conical (lug centered) nuts. I would be afraid of damaging the wheels.
You really should match the nut type to the wheel you are using. Everything I have seem on a GMC (OEM steel, Alcoa, or Eagle) has been a hub centered wheel with a flat bearing surface for the nuts or nut/washer combination.
I guess on a temporary basis you could get some conical lug nuts and some washers. Install the washers and flip the nuts over so the flat surface of the nuts is pressing the washer.

If you are still using the OEM type steel wheels, the correct lug nut is the
one with the flat mating surface that contacts the wheel. There is a
replacement lugnut that is improved available that has a washer mfg as part
of the nut. When the washer makes contact with the wheel, it no longer
spins, but the nut portion continues to tighten until torque is reached.
This type lugnut is especially handy when a retainer for a center hub cover
is used under the lugnuts as they are quite thin and will wrinkle when
torque is applied to the OEM lugnuts.

Robin,
If it helps any, Both Dodge 1-ton trucks I have owned have used the 9/16" flanged lug nuts. The '80 had identical ones to the original GMC, and the '00 has the washered type that Jim H was referring to. That said, I agree with Johnny that, for the short distance and low speed you are talking about, four lug nuts per wheel, spaced and torqued properly, will suffice. I wouldn't want to drive it any long distance, or at highway speeds that way, but a mile or two, at under 45 mph should not ,in my opinion, be a problem.

Ford uses (used?) them. My 73 came with a spare rim that was stamped with "Only Use FORD Swiveling Lug Nuts." It also was stamped "16x6" and had a 16.5 inch tire... sometimes you need to look at the fine print... even on your parts.

I have enough of the oem, if I can find them all. You can have them for shipping. I can get them in a small flat rate USPS box. Most of the time it gets there in 3 days. I can mail Monday. let me know.

I can only find 30. That is 5 per wheel, should be enough.
