I'm going to seal and paint the roof of the Royale. It currently has a rooftop TV antenna that you crank up when stationary. With all the TV broadcasts going digital, can I still use this antenna for local TV reception or it is obsolete.
Thanks.

Mike,
I have an older TV with a pair of $10 rabbit ears that have to be 30 years
and and a 32" newer flat screen. The flat screen gets it's digital signal
from an old TV antenna in the attic. The new broadcast digital TV uses the
same bands as the older analog TV so the antenna does not matter. Only
thing that matters is that you must use a converter for the old analog TV's.
You should be good to go if you're running a flat screen.

I have a crank-up antenna with a built-in amplifier and a TV with a digital tuner. The set-up works great. Back when both digital and analog signals were being transmitted the digital reception was far superior to the analog. Before throwing away your antenna I suggest you hook it up to a TV with a digital tuner (sooner or later you'll be getting one anyway) and see what your reception looks like. Or, as suggested, if you just love your analog TV you can use the analog to digital converter box.

And converters should be available quite cheaply. People used them on "less important" TV sets as they replaced the major sets with new ones. Now the "lesser" sets are being replaced and you should be able to find a converter for no more than $25. Look for the ChannelMaster Model D2A, especiallly if your TV set has an S-Video input capability! This converter is the only one that had that and is almost as good as component video (three video cables) and comes close to 720 digital quality.

my antenna is a winegard, i am not exactly sure of the model.
it has a crant up handle which also looks like it wmay also rotate it. seperatle there is what appear to be a wall switch shape recepticle. where one of the plugs would be there is a small slide switch that turns somethig on. even if only the small led. where the other recepticle would be are 2 wire terminals. these to wire terminals are attached to a small piece which appears to change the 2 wire to a coaxial type connector. under passenger seat i have coax
my coach also came wired from driver rear tire are to under driver set to use cable from campsite which worked in nc mountains a few weeks back.
i believe it was winegard web site , i dont know if part i saw was to add the my antenna head, or somehow replace part of my antenna head.
i have not even tried to raise or connect to my antenna. presently i borrowed the tv from my game roomfor coach. it is cable ready so worked when camping where cable is available.

The digital channels are in the UHF bandwidth, so any antenna should work fine. I do like the look of some of the newer, non-crank up models however, so it may be time to replace mine.
Remember, the over-the-air channels are still free (or more accurately sponsored by advertising).

Brian,
OK, the antenna you have is commonly referred to as a Batwing antenna.
http://www.winegard.com/wingman/index.php
Here's what Winegard says about Digital Signals and the Batwing:
http://www.winegard.com/kbase/kb_tip_results.php?tip_num=95
The plate on the wall with the slide switch and LED is a signal amplifier. When the led is lit it is on.
http://www.winegard.com/kbase/upload/2451489.pdf
I couldn't find it in the products section of the Winegard website.
At any rate if you plug a digital ready TV into the outlet and switch the amplifier on it should work.
I have one of the RS-2000 RoadStar Antenna with the amplifier wall plates in Double Trouble and it works fine with my digital ready
TV.
The only add on piece for the antenna head I could find is Wingman RV-WING UHF Add-On
http://www.winegard.com/wingman/index.php

Rob M.

After a look in Ted's Avion, the wall plate has an RF amplifier and splitter on it. It amplifies the TV signal for distribution. I never measured one, that amplifier may or may not work on DTV. Best approach is to try it... if it doesn't, then just use the coax coming down from the roof to it, sans amp.

For the most part, those amplifiers work just fine for digital television.
They are generally wideband amplifiers with a fairly high Q filter in the middle of the bandwidth (if it has an FM filter).
Keep in mind that your terrestrial television station is using the same 6 mHz wide channel to deliver 19.2 kbps of data stream, instead of the hash that was analog broadcast television.
It's interesting to see how they use that bandwidth. I saw a station in Pittsburgh that was delivering four SD broadcasts on one channel. One here in town is one HD and two SD on the same channel. Some use some pretty fancy encoding and cram three HD channels into that 19.2.
I digress. The amp will work. 1960's rabbit ears will work. So will all the amplifiers.

Well, the concern is the linearity of the amplifier, since it's now in pulse service rather than analofg video. (Look at the relative crest factors of the two signals). I've run on some stuff which simply can't handle DTV. These little amps seem to do so allright though. I would note, they're subject to overload and spur generation. In high signal areas, we used to see a lot of crud emanating from RV parks.
