Please join us this year for our second annual GMC gathering on the former Naval Station Treasure Island for Fleet Week 2011.
Special thanks to the GMC 49ers for sponsoring the event.
We've secured a great parking spot right along the shore of Clipper Cove in the shadow the the old Pan-Am Clipper Plane terminal. This is dry camping, but we do have access to a sewer dump on the island. T.I. is only one mile long and two-thirds of a mile wide so everything is close and it's a great place for walking and bike rides.
There are two restaurants, both with bars, within a block of the site. There are also four wineries for tastings, one next door to us. There are two convenience stores, one at the main gate, about a 1/4 mile from the parking. The Treasure Island Yacht club will be open next door and we may also arrange outings to the city as well. If you want to go on your own, MUNI has a frequent schedule with a stop nearby and rides to the city take only ten minutes.
By special arrangement, we'll be allowed to park some of the coaches on the Great Lawn with the crowd for the day as a base to watch the airshow from. This year is the 100th anniversary of naval aviation and promises to be one of the largest events in recent history. There will be many ships along the San Francisco waterfront open during the day for public tours. The airshow will feature a large number of aerobatic performances including the Canadian Forces Snowbirds 11-plane demonstration team as well as the U.S.Navy Blue Angels. There will also be demonstrations by the U.S. Coast Guard HH-65C Dolphin Helicopter and Aviation Rescue Swimmers.
This is going to be a great show, in a great city, in the best weather month we have here. Even if there were no Fleet Week, this is a rare opportunity to cruise in and stay this close to San Francisco.
Again, I've been able to keep costs to a minimum to attract as many coaches as possible. This year the cost is $20 per coach (to help pay the site fee) whether you stay just one or all four nights. You may arrive as early as Thursday and stay as late as Monday morning.
I was only able to arrange room for fifty coaches, so don't delay in registering.
I have an online registration form at http://gggmc.org (Or more specifically at http://gggmc.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15:fleet-week-on-treasure-island-gmc-49ers&catid=1:trips )
Be sure to sign up to the fleetweek@gggmc.org mailing list for updates as well.
Hope to see you out here!

I'm just trying to cover the fee they're charging me. I'd prefer to do it free like last year, but if you remember from last year, it turned out that there was some confusion about who was authorized to give me the space. This year I've gone through meticulous effort to ensure that we're totally legit. That cost a little money. On the plus side, it got us access to a dump station that we didn't have before. No need to "hold it" all weekend this time!
Also, I was scoping out the space. The new restaurant has just opened their bar. It's really nice inside and the food is good, too. That's right across the street from our parking lot. We'll probably get a dinner in town as well. After our accidental discovery of Oktoberfest at Schroeder's last year, I think we may have started a tradition. They said to give them advance notice if Wevers is coming. Ya!
I've still got some spaces left, but it could fill up. Be sure to register if you plan on attending. I'm using that form on the website because it makes everything much easier to organize. http://gggmc.org
Please feel free to spread the word.

Larry,
Thanks for the bump. Everyone is welcome to join us. I know there are folks who will be in the state for the Western States Rally the weekend before. This is a good way to extend that trip for those interested. Please feel free to pass along the info to your GMC friends and clubs, especially if they'll already be in California for the GMCWS rally.
The only real restriction that I have is that we got a special permit to camp based on us all being GMC's (no SOB's). The Navy and city offices on the island are sensitive to boondockers so this makes us a "car show." There have been some copper thefts from the old buildings out here, so they tightened up rules like these. Next year I'll try to do it a little differently if there's enough demand.
As an update, we've got about 30 of the 50 spaces filled. The yacht club has invited us to their party, the restaurants are ready, there will be wine tastings at most of the four wineries out here, and there will even be French acrobats doing performances on a boat in the cove for us to enjoy.

If it's not fully booked yet, then there is something wrong with West Coast GMC'ers. This is such a fantastic venue, and you are a natural host. Thanks again for putting this together.

Desmond,
I plan and hope to be back to SF in time for Fleet Week. Please reserve a space for me. I will figure out how to register and pay when I get a better/faster internet connection.
Lost in the wilds of New Jersey. I'll be coming from the farthest away for Fleet Week.
