I finally got the time to finish my Rockwell Intake and Bounds Carb install. HOLY COW!!!!! I thought my coach had power before, but this is insane!. I took off down the street like a bat outta hell. Hopefully with this and the new vacuum lines to the distributor advance, I should pass emissions, and everyone else on the freeway as well.
I checked the advance, it works, so wish me luck.

Awesome news Chr$. That should make a noticeable difference in gas mileage too. It will be interesting to see how much. Both those items are on my list. Good luck on the emissions test. Hope you pass.

Chris,
On 4/18/2011, Senate Bill 1324 was signed into law by our Gov. Why are you
emissions testing your historical vehicle?

Steven, Is it now on the list? Last I checked, it was not. Also, my coach was due in March. Do I need to get antique plates? I currently have AZ Highways plates on the coach.
I'll check Service AZ again...
Thanks for the tip.

Steve, they amended it to be 1974 and older for the across the board exemption, but there is a provision for 1996 and older if they are insured with classic car insurance like Haggarty. I'm checking out Hagarty now to see if it is even worth it. I have state farm on by coach.
I did spend over $600 on the carb and intake, so if it fails, I can get an exemption anyway.

Here's a copy of the entire bill as passed and signed by our Gov.
http://e-lobbyist.com/gaits/text/238853
AA. For the purposes of this section, "collectible vehicle" means a vehicle
that complies with both of the following:
1. Either:
(a) Bears a model year date of original manufacture that is at least fifteen
years old.
(b) Is of unique or rare design, of limited production and an object of
curiosity.
2. Meets both of the following criteria:
(a) Is maintained primarily for use in car club activities, exhibitions,
parades or other functions of public interest or for a private collection
and is used only infrequently for other purposes.
(b) Has a collectible vehicle or classic automobile insurance coverage that
restricts the collectible vehicle mileage or use, or both, and requires the
owner to have another vehicle for personal use. END_STATUTE

Steve, 2.b is the problem. I take mine in for emissions because it says on my renewal form "Emission Test Required" It is a PITA, but not that big a deal. This year I cranked my MSD adjustable timing knob down all the way, and the coach passed with flying colors.

Do you think it is more to do with a properly tuned carb. or the extra performace due to the aluminum intake?

As the aluminum intake is the same design (in order to fit under the hatch) just missing the cross-over, there is no "extra preformance due to the aluminum intake." (Or so little that you couldn't feel it... except the lighter wallet!)
So if that was all that was changed... must be the correct carb.
Note: There are other reasons for the aluminum intake.

Guys, see my details about passing emissions today in my other thread about vacuum. This carb performed better loaded than before the rebuild. It failed this morning because I failed to set the Idle high enough.
I plan to goto the MVD tomorrow to talk about the exemption. If I get the antique plates, that may do it, but those plates are kinda ugly, IMHO, and I have the AZ highways plates. They are cool.
The Classic insurance I looked at doesn't appear to cover "Camping type vehicles" so the insurance does me no damn good.

I tried every classic car insurer out there and plead my case for covering collector motorhomes, but no luck. I did go the collector car route on the 77 Celica GT Liftback I'm restoring and for $80 a year I got it covered and tagged legally. Of course in it's current state it's a little rough for the streets of Ahwatukee.

The carb gave me the better performance, not the intake. just no more vacuum leaks internally also probably helped.
Was at MVD today. No dice. the plate doesn't guarantee the no emissions test, and they are still running under the rules that 1966 and older only. so much for legislation. Of course, there is the collector car plate, but the GMC MH is not on the collector car list. Assholes. I died a little bit today having to sit in that filthy place for an hour.
Steve lives in Sierra Vista, which probably has no emissions req like Sedona, which is where I'll be registering next year at my mom's place.

Chr$,
I swapped the Holley carb on Double Trouble for a Dick Paterson Q-jet and the performance improved, however, when I swapped the OEM
distributor for one of his re-curved distributors it made a bigger difference than the carb!
I do know that both the vacuum and mechanical advance in the OEM distributor was working properly therefore it had to be the way he
sets up the advance curve. The initial setting is 12° and at max mechanical and vacuum its 40° total.
Here's the spec's on the dizzie (Aussie):
Distributor Specifications
Type: HEI - Modified
Application: GMC Motorhome
Engine: 455 Oldsmobile
Final drive: 3.07
Tow: No
Initial setting: 12° @ 600 RPM
RPM Advance
Centrifugal
800 2°
1000 5°
1250 10°
1500 12°
1750 13°
2000 14°
2250 16°
2500 18° 30° = Total
Vacuum
6" 0°
8" 2°
10" 6°
12" 10° 40° = Initial + Centrifugal + Vacuum
BTW I have Dick's permission to publish this info.

Rob M.
