Is there really a difference other than part number and color of wires?

Will one work as well as the other in either a Cal or Fed coach?

I don't know about CA coils, but colors do make a difference. GM had trouble starting the Olds. It was eventually determined that the starter cables (in the car) were creating an electronic interference with the pickup in the bottom of the distributor. It was decided that they would reverse the polarity of the pickup and that required changing the polarity of the coil. So, yellow-red is your friend. This could all go out the window if you grabbed a distributor off a Chevy or Buick.
(That being said, I ran with the pickup mismatched to the yellow-red coil for thousands of miles, and lived to tell the story.)

If your rig is starting well and idling smoothly, I am not sure it is worth worrying about.
