American Eagle Wheels [message #141564]

I have stored my GMC on the Oregon coast.
I had waxed the wheels before I left,for the winter.

When I came back this month, some of the wheels were
pitted. How can I clean them up, maybe with super fine steel
wool? I tried Mothers Mag and alum polish, but if didn't do
any good.

Any help would be very helpful.

Have you tried one of the balls that goes in a drill?
They look like they are made of sponge.
I had good luck with Gibbs Penetrant on alloy wheels. I sprayed them and they sat outside for the winter. No damage.

Hi Rich

Here is a web site that has all you need to polish the wheels.

The steel wool will scratch the wheel and will need to be buffed out. Some
chrome polishes also scratch the aluminum.

Rich,

don't use steel wool on aluminum. Steel particles get imbedded in the aluminum and cause corrosion. Aluminum wool might work.

I used them on Double Trouble's Alcoa wheels. It resulted in a matt finish that I found to be very difficult to polish; so difficult
I gave up and decided to wait and find a service that did it.

IIRC someone mentioned that truckers have their wheels polished "on the road."

The ones I'm thinking of are not "abrasive wheels" but look like that.
I think Macquiers (sp) sells them.

The best Mothers was not much when it came to my Alcoas. PO had let them get in sad shape. My friend Chuck Boyd sold me a bottle of stuff @ Bean Station that works great. Don't know if he pedals it or just had some extra but it is good.

I caught a piece of curb very slow in a parking lot right turn with my alcoa. I used the Dremel GMC tool with the finest sand paper and buffed it out. Finished with rubbing polish, turned out very well. Your mileage may vary.
