Has anyone figured out how to ensure that we get the correct, OEM-style, CV
joints when we order a Toronado axle?

I've got one noisy, leaky CV that I'd intended to replace while the
transmission's out, but I don't have the spare I thought I did.

The two times I was around when some were ordered the success rate was 50% both times. Both times they got one correct one and one incorrect Chinese one. All I can suggest is to order two and return one or both of them.

Darn! You get up early!

Several of the eBay ads show the original joints, but they haven't answered
my inquiries about whether that's what they actually ship. The EMPI's are
shown too, but aren't those the ones that won't fit our shafts?

I ordered 4 axles from Advance Auto this morning, warning them that we might
have to ship some or all of them back.

NAPA (not my usual, excellent, counter man) couldn't find a listing for
anything except the boot.

CarQuest's computer showed the Chinese copy so I didn't bother to order any.

I'll hit O'Reilly and AutoZone this afternoon -- well, on second though,
maybe not AZ -- they now require pre-payment for special orders. No problem
getting the refund, but it ticks me off that they can't trust me even though
I'm in there every couple of days and know most of the employees.

Sure wish I could find again the re-building outfit from Charlotte. They
normally deal wholesale only, but the owner was selling via eBay from his
vacation home. He sent me bare CV joints to just slip on my axles. I
thought I still had a couple, but can't find them; maybe Alan got them.

I needed to order an alternative drive shaft for an 04 highlander fwd earlier this week as part of a collision related susp repair. I called o'riellys and inquired about a reman assy. The guy asked me if I wanted a rebuilt one for around $119 or a "new" one for $99. I asked him where the new one was manufactured and he said "china or Taiwan or something". Then I asked him where their rebuilt assys came from and he said Mexico. I feel better about a "mexican rebuild" than a mystery fortune.

if not did you look in to see if all of the balls are the same size?

Sully,

Your email is sad and scary to read. The same thing is happening in Australia, they shutdown one of the steel mills here recently
because it could not compete with steel made overseas.

THIS IS NOT MEANT AS A POLITICAL STATEMENT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM!

PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS THREAD IN THAT DIRECTION!

Rob, there used to be a guy who would come to my shop and pick up a damaged drive shaft, take it to his shop and tear it down. He would then rebuild/replace the outer joint and boots. Whatever it needed as long as the shaft was not damaged. The axle would be thoroughly inspected and reassembled then brought back to me next day and he charged about a hundred dollars. With the price of "new" drive shafts being so low and in plentiful supply, he is no longer in business. Yeah, maybe consumers and insurance co's are saving some money but from a garage standpoint it is one more thing that can go wrong (wrong part, defective part, etc) and these "new" parts have a "lifetime guarantee" for THE PART. If there is a labor reimbursement assurance it is seldom worth the hassle to collect so the garage ends up bearing the burden of the "savings" over the long haul and large numbers with double labor expense incurred.
I don't care if it does sound political. It is sad.
Scrap iron prices are sky high due to overseas demand. They drag our scrap across the ocean, reformulate it into "new" products with cheap labor in unsafe and often inhumane conditions which allows them the cushion to ship it across the ocean AGAIN and still pull a profit.

Total BS

Just what I think

Or here in the Bay Area this week, Solyndra the big neighbor of AppliedGMC (GMC content)
shutting down and laying off 1100 people because they can't compete with Chinese solar panels.
Scary. Sad.
