I was waiting for them to have a GPS 4.3 sale . I had a 4.3 Garmin a couple of weeks ago but we had visitors for a week and it appears the kid must have liked my Garmin. So I guess I will see if I like a Tom Tom as well as I liked the Garmin. $50 is probibly cheaper then the update would have been.

G'day,
I found a Tom Tom at Sam's last year that came with lifetime upgrade for maps and IIRC it was $125.00.
Recently the Garmin 2610 I use here developed dementia and couldn't find satellites without thinking for 10-15 minutes. I called
Garmin Australia and they noted that was not uncommon in older units and the only thing I could do was send it in for repair. The
basic service charge was $90 so and I decided not to invest in an older unit but to go whole hog and bought a Garmin 3760. I was
able to buy it with lifetime upgrade for maps for $499.00. Keep in mind that EVERYTHING is more expensive here due to import duties,
taxes, and the small market.
http://ja-px.rtrk.com.au/Garmin/nuvi-3760-gps/
Note that now the damn thing is $100 cheaper, that's because they've come out with the 3790!
Anyhoo a one time map update from Garmin costs $99.00:
http://ja-px.rtrk.com.au/Garmin/city-navigator-australia-new-zealand-onetime-update/
A lifetime map updates cost $185.00:
http://ja-px.rtrk.com.au/Garmin/city-navigator-australia-new-zealand-lifetime-update/
I reckon that decision is a no-brainer!
I did a quick check and you lucky buggers can buy a lifetime upgrade in the USA for $74.95.
http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-numaps-north-america-lifetime-updates.html
I clicked on the negative (one *) comments and noted that a lot of them were from people that weren't realistic. They complained
that they wanted to update multiple GPS units with the same card. The upgrades were too large and took a long time to download. The
update software download program corrupted the downloads.
As far as I'm concerned, so far so good, I downloaded updated maps no problems.
The only complaint I have with the unit is that the voice commands don't like my Yank accent, I need to affect an Aussie accent to
get them to work properly!
Regards,
Rob M.

Rob, ask them what they consider 'lifetime'. Garmin told me ten years. Which point is moot, I bought the Germin off a friend whose employer bought him a new Gee - Wiz one from Garmin. I got $50 in it, it suffices. My friend who teaches geography at Ms State tells me the main problem with all the GPS units for consumer use is, the manufacturers buy the cheapest mapping availavle, and it often isn't very accurate or recent. I've run into this problem now and again.

Johnny,
Here in Australia there are LOTS of dirt tracks in the Outback. I remember heading to Lightning Ridge in northern New South Wales
back when I lived here in the 1980's and I'd follow maps. It was not unusual to be driving along and come to a "T" in the road that
was not on the map. You tossed a coin to see which way to go and hoped it was correct.
I haven't done any touring here since we retired in 2002 but I'll bet that still happens!
I called Johnny Appleseed and they advised that "Lifetime" is for as long as I own the unit. If I sell the unit the license for the
"Lifetime" upgrades cannot be transferred to the new owner. HOWEVER, if I give the new owner my Username and Password to myGarmin
then they can go in and download map updates from myGarmin account.
Regards,
Rob M.

I am currently running a Garmin that I found on sale at Target. It was
reduced from $395 down to $99. Almost cheaper then updating the maps in my
5 year old one.
It works fine and it even came with one free map upgrade with no expiration
date.
The problem is - I can be right in front of or even in my favorite
McDonald's enjoying a senior coffee and free wifi and if I search for "Fast
Food" it doesn't show up. It list fast food locations in the area by random
distance. My old Garmin listed by distance - closest first. What a pain as
you drive down the road and pass where you want to go.
My guess is they do it based on some type of advertising $$$$$.

Change in policy for the newer and better stuff. I've a friend in Blanchard, OK, and the GPS always sends me to the opposing corner of the section he lives on. But, being as it's Blanchard, OK, I can see his place across the section, making it fairly easy to get there. With the Garmin complaining the while.

Mike,
I have a manila folder in my filing cabinet labeled Garmin, in it is all the documentation on the three Garmin units I own.
If you give anyone your myGarmin username and password they can mess with any other units you have registered.

Put a label on the GPS with the user name and password. If it has any removable or open-able covers, put it inside.
Saves having to remember anything.... (I only have so many usable brain cells! )
