Duce, let's see if we can get your original thought going

I live in the hood.(historic district)The coach sits in my drive. We have no realistic police presence, but have a bumper crop of lowlifes who do patrol for thievery reasons. It's up to me to keep things attached to coach. I also travel on business to major urban areas with my destinations usually not in very good areas. (Theaters, Conv. Centers) Here are some steps I'm taking to keep losses and damages to a minimum.

Camera- I want their picture! Why stop with just a toad cam. For $79-$200 depending on config. (Tiger Direct/CompUSA) has a 4 cam/ w. HD system that will record @ 3 days before recording over itself. The video out will go to a small dash mounted LCD screen that will let you monitor L & R blind-spots, gen. compartment, and toad while driving.

Alarm- I agree with the logic of locking things will lead to damage as they try to get in doors or my old style windows. A glass brk. and or motion sensor will trigger an int. mounted 128db siren and flash lights. They won't be around long and ears should bleed if they enter coach. Newer alarms can also notify you via web or text of their status. Your choice what to do next.

Shut Off- For fire and security reasons I have HD marine type on/off switch located low on the firewall to completely kill coach electrically except alarm.

Safe- I am just starting new interior so I haven't located the ideal spot, but it won't be easy to find. There are just somethings like passports, you can't have stolen.

This forum is loaded with the best engineers and tinkers anywhere. Let's hear some ideas. Help those of us out that don't have those acres, shops and pits I drool over.

Thanks! Pete

Pete,

The operational PO set my coach up for Mexico. Everything locks. The only open door is the reefer access, everything else requires one of the eight keys that came in the coach's set. The windows all have and additional flip lock that will keep a window from sliding even if the lock is defeated. It also came with chain and padlocks, two cable locks and a club.

Many - MANY years gone, A company that I did some work for had safes (vaults) mounted in the company vans. These were bolted to the vehicle frame rail and not easily removed (a one beer story there). A small safe on e-bay says it bolts to walls or floors, that might be an answer.

But - Locks only stop honest people.

Pete, good thread! I do love the gun talk, been a gun nut since I was in my early teens, that said I was looking for ways to harden the coach while away. I'm not worried while I'm in it, since I can decide if I want small neat holes, or a bloody mess! I am the best security system I know of, yet I obviously can't be everywhere at once.

Granted I know lock won't stop the dedicated, but counter measures can slow them down. A loud alarm can draw attention as well as cause physical discomfort if it is loud enough. I have a train horn on my rig (the real deal by Nathan not the knock offs) so if I could get a large enough air tank I imagine a train horn frantically blasting like some OEM alarms would be effective if I could store enough air for 30 seconds of tooting. A horn that is loud enough to be heard over a mile away is sure to make any would-be thief think twice as to how long he wants to stay near by.

I also like some of the other passive meäsures you mentioned like safes, and video surveillance. Do you have any recommendations on models or brands?

Pete,

The multi camera set up sounds interesting.

Could you give us brand names and/or model numbers you like?

Thanks

Duce,

What size air tank do you want and where are you located?
I am currently installing a 15L tank on my GMC.

Oops, I lied.

"Install 1 SATA Hard Drive up to 2 TB for several months of File storage on your DVR or set your DVR settings to instantly record over oldest files so you never have to worry about changing the Hard Drive."

Q-See QC444 Network DVR - 4 Channel
, $120 + 2TB Hitachi HD from same folks $70 = $190. Not bad but still need cameras but that's another thread. Cams can be had at HF for next to nothing, and better ones more purpose oriented only a bit more.

14x6 - hideable

12 volts- yes, just chop wall wort for plug. Straight to fuse box.

BNC and VGA out.

With some sort of cell/internet access(air card)coach could be viewed from anywhere on anything. (Even Austrailia...) Pretty boring watching but if you have coach separation anxiety...

***I have not installed one of these yet. But reviews are pretty good. 12 month guaranteed. I've never had a problem returning anything even refurbished tv's, laptops and the like.

Duce, I got the coolest metal-flake blue tank with green flames. It came off a monster tractor puller for $30. I just love eBay sometimes.

Oh, I also will have my "peacemaker" velcro'd in a strategic, hidden spot somewhere within steering wheel and pedals.

Video is absolutely useless. The guys steal your stuff and then after the fact you try to look at the video and guess who it was wearing the hoodie that did it. We had a local place of business broken into for 3 weeks in a row. The video was great but they never figured out who it was. On the 3rd week the cops were patrolling the area. They just waited until the cop drove by and then they broke in after he left.

Forget the video, It won't stop anybody.

That flame thrower would take care of those pesky guys w. the squeegee and spray bottles.

I remember a grizzled old shop foreman of my dads would take a 6v Model A coil, power it w. 12v and ground them to the frames of the yard cranes and trucks some how. It would shock the living s$&* out of the urchins who would vandalize after hours. They would angrily come by and tell you so the next day Smile

Hey, I know folks are less than enthusiastic about divulging their favorite hiding spots. Let's hear in generalities some good ideas for a small safe or some good hiding areas.
