I need to get a new key made for my 76 Crestmont 23 footer. Any one know what parts bin the steering column came from?

Chuck

If you have the original GM keys, they
are standard items and you can get dupes
made at Wal-Mart for $1.59 each, IIRC.
They keys even look like original GM
keys but with the GM logo left off.

That's where I had three spares made
for both door and ignition for my 76.
The store also had chrome key fobs
with the GMC logo on them. Got 4 of
them at the same time!

What about removing the components in the steering column?

I think my turn switch has failed and needs replacement.
(how would I confirm that? have multi-meter)

Are special tools needed to get down to the turn switch?

What else might I replace/rebuild while I'm in there?

Thanks guys!

YES. Steering wheel puller & lock plate compressor. Both can be loaned from Auto Zone and probably O'Reilly's & others. There are precautions to take so that you don't damage the column. DON'T over tighten the lock plate compressor or you will wish you didn't.

Chuck: welcome to the net. I have a 76 crestmont 23 also, here are some pics.
http://tinyurl.com/3xcs8j
while you are there you might want to click on home and then register and start posting some pics. Is yours a rear bath or side bath?

On the steering column it is GMC only from the knuckle down, it is longer. You can graft a 85 Caddy tilt & telescopic from the knuckle up. This puts the dimmer, elec wiper/ washer switch for Ken H conversion, late model cruise from a 90s pu, flash to pass from a 91 jeep cherokee, and cornering lights.

On a new switch for your column I use a SW326 from Auto Zone $19.99. It has the extra wire for cornering lights if you want to use it, or not. It is sane switch that sells for $39.99 without the cornering light option.

my name is Chuck also.

Chuck,

Your profile is relatively devoid of information. If you are in striking range of Goshen, you should try to get to meet Joe Ekl. He is a locksmith and brings along tools to cut new keys by number.
