I am disassembling a ladder and rail from my 1973 GMC, the ladder steps are
assembled using roll pin or fittings that are punched into the step through
the ladder tubing. How do I remove the roll pin, there are no holes on the
back side of the step so I can't keep pushing them through. Any suggestions
on this? They are spring steel so drilling will not work.
Also is there a seam in the ladder tubing hidden behind the steps on the
ladder or are the tube pieces one piece? The reason I ask this is because
some of the braces that attach the ladder to the coach back or roof will not
come off since they will not slip around the bend in the tubing, makes me
think there must be a hidden joint where these can slip off.

Thanks for any help

Serge,

Use a drill small enough to go inside the roll pins to drill through the
back of the step. Then use those holes as pilots to drill to the outer
diameter of the roll pins so you CAN drive them through.

I would not expect the tubing to have an obvious seam. I suspect the bends
were made after the standoffs were installed. After all, why would anyone
want to be taking them off? ;-)

Serge / Ken,

I have a set of instructions on how to mount the genuine GMC ladder in my folder on Double Trouble. Unfortunately I am sitting in
front of a PC in Sydney and the folder is in Humble, Texas so that's no bloody use!

However, I took the roof rack off Double Trouble to reseal the attachment points and found that there were stainless steel set
screws in brackets to hold the tubing in place.

To get the tubing out you have to take the mounts off the roof and then slip the mounting brackets off.

I did not remove the steps so I don't know how they're held on.

Regards,
Rob M.

Where are they heading too?

I will be driving from NC to Northern Cali next week and then back to NC after Sept 10th, I could possibly assist in the transportation.

Sir: is there anyway you might transport a packed rear glass to La Mesa, Calif? Its a freebie for a friend.

My plan is to take 40 across the country and head north once I hit Barstow, Deming and La Mesa are way out of my way, and I am on a deadline to be in Norcal for my wedding, so I can not deter from my path. If arrangements can be made to meet near 40, I think it will be possible.

I have to think about the glass and how much space it will take up.
The ladder can always be strapped to mine.

Serge,

Could you provide some details on how you shipped the ladder IIRC the USPS max length is 48" or the like.

Rob,
I am sending it UPS with the max length and girth I believe is 165". I
finally was able to remove 2 of the steps about half way up the ladder, I
cut both sides at the point where the roll pin went through the tube that
holds the step in place, by putting an insert in like the rest of the ladder
and rail system it will be strong and the step will go back right over the
new seam. The buyer had agreed to this and it was the only way to get it to
size. When I had my diesel pusher, I bought a ladder for it and it was
assembled in the same way, never had any problems with it. Shipping it full
size would have had to go freight and the cost would have been $1,069.00 ,
no way we could do that.

Serge,

Thanks, I kinda figger'd you went with UPS but I thought you might have found a way to send it via USPS to ship it.

I have transmission dipstick I need to get to Australia that's over the max USPS limits but UPS is giving me a crazy price.
