Went to add some duracool to my 91 probe. AC not working. Noticed the clutch would kick in and shut off after 4-5 seconds. Classic low refrigent symtom. Hooked up the gauges and had 71-72 pounds,,,,??? thats odd. When it leaked out of this car before it would be lower. Fired it up and turned on the AC to max,max fan and the clutch kicks in but the pressure goes UP!!!! Shuts off about 4-5 sec. Pressure rises to about 95. Holy cow. Never seen that before. Usually when this car was low the static pressure would be 30-50 and drop to 8-15 when the clutch would cycle bumping on the low pressure switch. Only thing I can think of is its full and has a blockage after the ac compressor. What do you think,,,,thanks,,,PL

Hard to tell much with the suction pressure 4-5 seconds is not enough time. Does this car have a high pressure cutout on the discharge? If so it may be cycling the clutch. What could cause this could be air in the system from the last time it was charged or possibly a plugged dryer or flow rater.

Do not get mad at me, but are you sure you are looking at the LOW side? It really sounds like you are connected to the high side with your gauge and you need more Duracool in the system.

the low side is the larger size tube. the cycling switch is actually located on the high pressure or smaller tube.

I agree. It sounds like the gauges are connected correctly.

If things don't compute, you will need to monitor the high pressure side also in order to easily detect refrigerant blockage.

Paul,
You will get very high pressure on the low side on a hot day if there is no
air movement past the condenser. Some of those cars rely on ele fans and if
the fan isn't working, you would have those symptoms.

Ok,,,,thanks for the responses. Ken,,,,checked this morning and the gauges were hooked up corectly. Steve,,,,the pressure rose istantly from 71-72 to 95 in about 4 seconds. Elctric fan was runnin. iInside (evap) and out(cond.). Still stumped. Thought I might run it and tap on the ex. valve (if its got one) but it looks like its inside. Might have an oriface tube(?),,,,haven't goten a chance to look at the factory manual. Working on selling one house, purchaseing another. I've got over 8 acres of grass to cut at 3 locations(son just left fo quatar) and 2 broken riders,,,,man,,,,PL
