Rob Mueller alerted me to a problem with the fonts on the new area I put
up on GMC Eastern States (http://www.gmceast.com/travel). He's running XP
and Internet Explorer 6 or whatever.

So, I decided to check it out with Win7 and IE 8. Just as bad. I upgraded
to IE 9. It got worse. In fact, some of the graphics utilized in the CSS
(techy talk) stopped displaying.

Then, knowing how the Registry site is put together, I checked it. Royal
suck!

Everything works as it should on Windows 7 using Firefox, Opera and
Safari. Everything works as it should using Mac OS 10.5 and up on Firefox,
Opera and Safari. I didn't check Chrome on both platforms because I'm not
paid to worry about everything (in fact, I'm not paid to worry about much).

So, if anyone else is having a pleasurable experience, please share your
secret. Otherwise, I put a notice at www.gmceast.com that Internet
Exploder isn't supported. Yes, it does explode (or maybe it imploded).

Byron,

It appears to work OK with Chrome. I only entered test data and then Reset,
so it wasn't an exhaustive test, but I had no problems.

One of the great things about computer standards is that there are so many to choose from.....

Apparently that's what the IE team decided to do -- let's just deprecate
some Open Standards and push our own.

Sent from my Atari 800 I was able to get to the Internet somehow.

Good move Byron.

This crap they do changing away from standards just enough to screw up the average user really needs to be highlighted. What they are probably trying to do is to get the rest of the world to change to their specs so they can then say that other browsers have problems.

Thanks for supporting the existing standards and telling MS to shove it.

Hey Byron
I am on my computer with XP pro and Firefox 4.
The fonts are oversized and bold on the travel site ES.
I was there yesterday and it worked fine then.

Could something have changed at the ES website??? or on the travel part of the site???

Just asking...

SOME Friends have just put Firefox 6 on their computer and it seems to have compatibility issues at the moment.

I have had FireFox 4 since it came out and can't say that I had an issue with it at all. I only mentioned that the site may have changed because I've been there more than once before ( or any site ) with no font problems. This is the first site this has ever occurred using my machine with XP/FF4.

As I am not the only seeing an issue, to me the site is suspicious.

Just my thoughts, thanks for the FF6 mention, I'll check it out further.

Hi

You might want to check the validity of your html code and css code using
the W3 tools at
http://www.w3.org/QA/Tools/

The campground pages are properly formatted in IE9 standard mode so there
must be some differences in the code in the other two pages.

The W3 test show problems with the XHTML code as well as warnings in the CSS
code.

You guys are smart.

I changed the campgrounds page the AM. Now it works better but unless I
run IE 9 in compatibility mode it looks like trash.

I'll work on the other pages tonight. I still found some other
compatibility issues with IE 8/9 and have programmed the HTML around them.

I didn't have to before, and for the moment, I have not been back on the Windows XP/FireFox system.

However the ubunto/FireFox system has no problems, thats a good thing.

I will certainly give it a try but I just thought it suspiscious that this just came up to me and others after I had been there with no problems before. I'm just thinking out loud Ken, I'm not trying to start any problem.

Hi Byron

Both the campgrounds and the to-see pages look OK in both IE9 native and
compatibility mode. I don't see any change between the two mode.

The travel page still has the font size messed up. It looks the same in
both IE90 modes.

Try changing line 73 from

To
<h2>Recommendations from Fellow GMCers!</h2></div>

Yep. That was one problem.

There were others that my magnifying glass found.

I believe all three pages are behaving better. There are still some issues
with IE but I think I've worked around those. These three pages have
required more time than any other three pages out of the whole site of 57.
Wow! My eyes hurt as well as my brain.

Rob,

I'm not. It was a good idea with doing. Anything worth doing is worth
doing right. Right?

Now, if some guys will only chip in. I have two more submissions to post.
I stopped to work on the font and table reading issues before continuing.
Now I'm ready to continue ... I think.

I've learned a whole lot that I can now forget.

OK KEN
I fired up the XP/FIREFOX machine and went to the site. Pressing CTRL/+ only magnifies the page, it did not change the font. CTRL/- brings it back again.

Just what I experienced...

I now run both XP/FIreFOX and ubunto/Linox for web. I have not had a problem with ubunto/Linox with any pages on any site that I can think of.

XP/FIREFOX will have concerns but usually it means I have had a viral attack again. This is why I am trying ubunto/Linox. It seems to be immune to viral attack.

Just my thought
