Hi
My buddies 74 Eldorado has a stripped castellated hub nut & he can't find a replacement. Any ideas? Is it the same as a GMC?
  Thanks,  Norm.

Can he use a normal nut and cut slots in it with a mini grinder
using a fine cut off blade?

Since the CV joints and stub axles are interchangeable, the nuts must be.
Dorman should have the nuts, but their web site is difficult to navigate.
With the thread size, a search under "castellated nuts" would probably
enable one to find it.

Thanks. We thought of this as a last resort. What is the torque setting?

Can he use a normal nut and cut slots in it with a mini grinder
using a fine cut off blade?

Norm,

Here's some reference info:

Ref: 1972 Cadillac Shop Manual P/N 109 9560
Page: 3-53 - Front Wheel Drive - Torque Specifications
Material No.: 286-M (I have NO idea what that means)
Application: Drive Axle Nut
Size: 1" - 20
Foot-Pounds: 150

Ref: GMC Parts Book 78Z
Page: 1-7
Figure: 1.003
Key: -
Part No.: 389791
Description: Nut - hub (1-20 unef)

Ref: Maintenance Manual X-7525
Page: 3B-12 Drive Axles
Torque Specifications
Drive Axle Nut at Wheel Hub - 200 Ft. Lbs.

Comments: It appears that the nut is the same; however, the torque requirements are lower.

Regards,
Rob M.

Norm,

You're welcome!

BTW I was sent the following by a GMCer who wishes to remain anonymous:

Quote

It might be worth pointing out that the nut takes a 1-1/2" socket, preferably 3/4" drive, something that should be carried in the
coach along with a 3/4" breaker bar. They are not expensive at Tractor Supply, pretty dear at Sears and beyond reach at Snap-On and
similar. I also carry a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter and a 1/2" drive torque wrench just in case.
