We have recently moved from California to Washington state and find that we must have a "retail" value determined by a "dealer" in order to register our GMC.  This has to do with a luxury tax.  Any suggestions as to who might be able to supply a retail price?  How much can a 1976 motor home be worth?

I'd try to get some information from eBay listings, and bring them in. I assume you wouldn't want a high appraised price as you will be taxed on this.

Otherwise, JimK at Applied GMC does appraisals for insurance purposes.

Try to find a Kelly Blue Book or N.A.D.A. evaluation on the net.
That may be satisfactory to the tax folks.

Move to a state that doesn't charge a luxury tax. I am not kidding. The gouging won't stop there. You probably will find yourself in a neighborhood with a "Home Owners Association" AKA busybody city slickers that have nothing better to do with their time than order you to mow your lawn and paint your garage door, dictating what color it will be, under penalty of litigation, while charging you by the month for the "service".
Alternatively, "sell" your GMC to a close friend or relative in a citizen-friendly state/country and keep it at your house.

Hi;

I moved from CA to WA about 7 years ago. I brought the 76 Palm
Beach that we had at the time. It wound up costing me about $110/year
(thanks to the weight tax). I don't remember a luxury tax on any of my
registrations. I now have the Stretch and it is costing me $113/year.
I don't remember if they ever asked me what either of them were worth,
but if they did I probably said around $3k. They did ask me how long I
had owned them. I think they would have charged me a sales tax if it
had been a short time. The one thing I did do was make sure everything
was in my name when I came from CA. If not, then the vehicle has to be
inspected by the State Patrol.

I'd take three or four bids at closing on ebay.  That should be sufficient to establish value.

Ron,

Maybe this would work?

http://www.nadaguides.com/RVs/1978/G-M-C

By the way the retail price is what it sold for in 1978!

NADA (Bluebook) is what they (DMV) are looking for. They (NADA) say my Birch is "worth" $3500. (I would say private party market value (retail) would be double that.)

One thing to keep in mind... this NADA value is the value the insurance companies will give you for a total loss.

If you have a coach worth much more than what this site says... and you want to have coverage somewhere near what you think it is worth.... you NEED to get an appraisal and agreed value insurance.

I wonder what the scrap value for the metal and aluminum would be?

I'd certainly use the NADA value for tax purposes, they'd have a hard time arguing with you that it's worth more.

If you are willing to do the work of separating it all, $700. Metal prices are high right now. But the aluminum must be free of any ferrous metal (no steel bolts/screws) to get the best price. Otherwise you are looking at about $500.

I just talked to a Lady running an antique tag on her GMC from Washington State. She said her plate was $1000, 10% of purchase price. No test or renewal ever.
