Don't forget to check the axle bolts every now and then. I have known of at least two guys losing an axle. While waiting on Ken B. this morning I was checking everything on the engine for tightness. I had just checked the axle bolts 1000 miles back. I was surprised to find the driver's side all loose, I mean nearly finger tight. The passenger side was ok. I have in the past wired these things. I am thinking that will happen again when I get home.
See everyone in about 3 weeks. I guess I better pay up or I will have a late charge for the convention. I think the deadline is this week.

Dan, Clean 'em up and put loctite on them. Should help anyway.

Hi Dan,

If these are the same axle bolts I am thinking about, my recollection was that these were a "one time use only" and had to be torqued to a specific spec. When I did my axle boots years ago, I bought new bolts from a local GM Cadillac Buick dealer here in San Diego for something like $8.00 each.

Dan, How did you safety wire the axle bolts?. Those are pretty (extremely)
hard to drill. Did you buy aircraft grade bolts that were pre-drilled.?
Aside from LOCTITE what these really need are a metal tab that anchors
around the flange and then bent up and center punched into the bolt head
points.

Thanks

You could have gotten them from Jim Kanomata at Applied GMC for $63 for a set of 12 ($5.25 each).

Gary,

I drilled mine with a cobalt drill from Harbor Freight.

See item 36891 @ $59.99.

Or

Item 47653 @ $99.99 on sale; normally $129.99.

I have the large set here in Sydney and carry the small set in Double
Trouble and they are both amazing quality for cheap Chinese crap.

HOWEVER, as with any cobalt drill you have to be careful when you use them
in a hand held electric drill. They are brittle and can snap easily.

Regards,
Rob M.

When I bought my 1974 Sequoia, in November 1977, The passenger side
six cv bolts were loose. I tightened them to spec and 500 miles later
they were loose again. This time I installed new bolts with locktite
and torqued to 70 ft lbs. 500 miles later they were loose again.

Turned out the right front wheel bearing was failing. After replacing
the bearing, the cv bolts have never loosened again.

We need some kind of a tab washer that locks over the flange and then is
bent up to the bolt. Something like these:

Subject: Re: [GMCnet] Axle Bolts

When I bought my 1974 Sequoia, in November 1977, The passenger side
six cv bolts were loose. I tightened them to spec and 500 miles later
they were loose again. This time I installed new bolts with locktite
and torqued to 70 ft lbs. 500 miles later they were loose again.

Turned out the right front wheel bearing was failing. After replacing
the bearing, the cv bolts have never loosened again.

Ken,

You should also advise people to acquire a 3/8-12 point 1/2 drive socket as the install torque is real near the breaking load for a 3/8 drive socket. One like 5545A47 (5.79ea) lives in my can of spare screws.

Even if what you do have is guaranteed for life, you still would have to get it replaced to finish the job.

We need some kind of a tab washer that locks over the flange and then is bent up to the bolt. Something like these:

Thanks

Nice thought Gary, but with the flange and double hex, those won't work very well.

Something I used to work on had lockers that were sheet metal and had holes about the root diameter of the double hex (or triple square - it might have been metric). When every thing else was done, one would line up this keeper on two heads and bash it with a soft face hammer to start it, then drive it down with a tube-like tool. Nothing ever came loose and it was faster that pulling safety wire and easier to remove.

Maybe someone with a water jet or laser could make some.

Matt,

This subject came up a couple of years ago and I did some testing.
Unfortunately I can't find my "test report in my folder.

Suffice it to say that I got some of the OEM 12 point bolts from Cinnabar
and bought some Allen socket head bolts locally that were made by a company
in Georgia (gotta be good eh Ken!).

Here's a summary of what I did:

- machined the top and bottom of the OEM bolts to assure they were flat.

- machined the bottom of the Allen socket head bolts to assure they were
flat and got a bearing that sat on the bottom of the socket and extended
above the sides of the socket so I could measure it accurately.

- put a final drive flange in my vice

- bolted an inner CV joint housing on top of the flange

- measured the OEM bolt and torqued it down to 75 ft lb

- removed and measured it

- measured the Allen socket head bolt and torqued it down to 75 ft lb

- removed and measured it

- RESULTS: the OEM bolts stretched more than the Allen socket head bolts

I repeated the above lubricating the threads on both bolts with copper
anti-seize. The OEM bolt stretched even more than the Allen socket head
bolts.

I repeated the test torquing the bolts higher, the OEM bolt snapped.

If I can find the bloody email with the data in it I will send it in!

Rob M.

Dan, How did you safety wire the axle bolts?. Those are pretty (extremely)
hard to drill. Did you buy aircraft grade bolts that were pre-drilled.?
Aside from LOCTITE what these really need are a metal tab that anchors
around the flange and then bent up and center punched into the bolt head
points.

Thanks

Gary, yes, they are hard to drill. I did it on Bert Curtis press and he safety wired them for me. Bert is a good guy to know.
