I need to find a material to apply to the underside of the floor - just over
the exhaust- other than metal heat shields.
I thought of the hot rod insulation - foil on both sides of felt however I
lit a match to the felt and it burned.
Need something that will not burn but will protect against high heat.

Get some Wal-mart cookie sheets and screw them to the underside of the floor above the mufflers.

Do you have space to turn the WalMart cookie sheets over and use spacers to maintain the air space? Seems like that would be very effective.

I went to Walmart and bought the cookie sheets. I knew I would then have to
have a spacer between the pan and body to allow air to flow.
I will try Lordco on Monday for NON- Combustible Non Heat transferring
spacers.

Otherwise I will be cooking a lot of cookies.

You can get (I believe its called ceramic fiber) used in kilns for glass fusing applications.  This material can withstand temperatures as high as 2300 degrees.  Perhaps this will be suitable for your application.  Here's a link that you may find useful.    http://ceramicfiber.net/

Dwayne,

You can get insulating ceramic composite spacers at any wood stove or
fireplace shop. Usually $ .50 to $1.00 each. Pre-drilled centers. From
1" to 2".

My plan, as of .05 seconds ago...is to use 2 cookie sheets with a 1/8" spacer between them. Probably a piece of steel plug welded in place.

This way you have a nice air gap.

Keith;

My sons were teenagers when we got our new '73 Canyomlands 26 footer

Mark actually suggested that we place a frozen pie on top of the intake

The GM solution on later coaches was a sheet of aluminum attached direct to the bottom of the floor with no air gap. I blew a hole in the top of one of my mufflers the size of a softball. I drove that coach home almost 500 miles with the hole blowing exhaust on the floor and had no problems with GM's heat shield design.

I have a 75 transmode with a hole burned through the wooden floor just inside of the door. On checking underneath there is a hole burned through the aluminum sheet and the foam insulation. This is right over a joint in the exhaust pipe.

Before I install my new exhaust system I will be installing a galvanized steel sheet with fiberfrax insulation sandwiched to the floor. I also found the exhaust side of the black tank has been deformed by heat. I will be installing Bill Brown's heat shields (California emissions item) on my exhaust pipes nex to the gas tanks and will also install a similar shield to protect the black tank. (I wonder if I can get JimK to sell me 1/2 a set of shields)

Ken you are a brave soul. I once blew a muffler but patched the hole with a piece of sheet metal from Ace hardware before continuing 500 miles to my destination. Still noisy but I felt better about it.

Yes, it is pretty clear, when you hear exhaust leaks, you need to pay
attention and go fix them. They never get better and always cause a
problem.

headers blow out gaskets and harm the heads
leaking clamps will let exhaust burn through almost anything
holes in mufflers, can burn the floor, and plug up
leaking pipes, will burn almost any place

exhaust manifolds are going to crack, and be gone ;>)

not hard, but not fun

Larry, I like that. While I have not noticed any problems with my rear muffler heating the black tank I still think you have a good idea. Will see what I can do that is similar.
