Hi, We are putting a replacement engine in my son's Sprinter Van, The engine is a inline 5 cyl Mercedes Turbo Diesel. I want to add an EGT gauge. Would anyone know whether it is better to mount the thermocouple before the turbo on the engine manifold or after the turbo close to the outlet? The thermocouple is one the that could clamp on to either the engine exhaust manifold or the turbo exhaust manifold.
Thanks

Gary,
While Hal's remark is completely valid, I would answer that you can put it anywhere that is convenient for you. You are dealing with a computer controlled engine and the EGT will only get out of band if there is a failure. In that case it is most likely that the result will be either a notable loss of power (and lower EGT) or visible smoke (and probably lower EGT). Since the TC you are using clamps to the exterior of the pipe and is not in the actual gas stream, the response will likely be too slow to prevent damage should a failure occur. In either location, it will provide the driver with a window to the engine operation that could be vary valuable in the future.

Empirically, Mercedes hasn't had good luck with the 5 cyl in the Sprinters. Friend had two replaced gratis by Mercedes through the Dodge dealer who sold it. The service rep told him in both instances, the wastegate failed to open and the engine ran full boost into destruction. Whether this was a control or gate problem wasn't made plain. And how accurate the rep was wasn't made plain either - but they have failed a fair number of those engines in that service.

This one just turned 325,000 so not too bad. Trans replaced at 250,000.
We're doing the new motor as preventative.

That's a decent life. Dan's both died before 100K. He's had no problems with the third engine for a couple of years now. He's a commercial electrician, thwe truck sees heavy service.

I installed the EGT thermocouple in the left bank exhaust manifold on my chevy. I've heard in this application that the driver should try and keep the temp below 1000 F and not spike over for more than a few seconds.
I can easily spike it by the time I get to the end of an on ramp. Its also putting out a little more power now than when I bought it from GM.
