Hello all,
500 Cad Exhaust Manifold, Right Side:
Our right side, rear outlet exhaust manifold on our Cad 500 powered GMC Eleganza has cracked and almost broken completely into two pieces.
I am working on a hi-tech tin can/radiator hose clamp fix in an attempt to mitigate the effects of the broken manifold.
A quick search of the forum indicates the right side (passenger side) manifold is common to both rear wheel drive cars and the Eldorados.
Would someone in the know please verify this fact for us? It's only been seven short years and I can't remember for sure which one's which.
We have about 1500 miles to go to get to mom's parts pile to check spares ourselves to make the manifold determination and see if we have a replacement.
If the right side is Eldo only, I'd better start looking now as we head to where we can do the repairs. Any leads or suggestions?
500 Cad Headers, by Cad Co?
Has anyone tried headers for the Cad 500 / GMC?
If so, please tell us how they worked out; fit, performance, cost, who made them, etc?
Thanks so much,
Don & Susan Jeffers

Don,
The right (passenger) side is common to all Caddy 500's.
The left (drivers) side is unique to FWD Eldos to clear the trans.
IIRC Larry Weidner mentioned that someone built headers for the Caddy 500.

Rob,
There are actually two different RH manifolds for the 500. With
or
without the EFE valve. Also, the original EFI cars had a spacer
in
place of the EFE valve. If you get one with the EFE valve, it
will
probably be frozen solid. I usually torch off the shaft and use
it as
a spacer. The manifolds are apparently easy to break.

Gary,
I hoped you'd pipe up!
Is the position of the outlet to the exhaust pipes the same on both
manifolds?

We are not broke down. Thanks so very much for the offer to help.
Just a cracked manifold and 1500 miles to go to our spares. The manifold is solidly bolted on. Hopefully I will get the tin can fix around the crack today to prevent any direct blasts of heat on anything.
Thanks to all who responded. I am resting easily now that I know we don't need a manifold made of unobtainium.

Don,
Before I shipped my Caddy 500 to Australia I did a daily search for Cadillac
500 on eBay and found a spare drivers and a passenger sides (without thermal
thighy Gary mentioned). As you noted the passenger sides are plentiful but
the drivers side are rare. When they do show up the starting prices are
silly. However, patience paid off and I got one for less than $100.
I just checked The Cad Co Catalog and note that the following:
http://www.cad500parts.com/catalog/page30.htm
GMC Motorhomes (FWD) (mandrel bent) $795
GMC Motorhomes (FWD) (non-mandrel bent) $595
These fit in most Cadillac engine swaps into the 70s Olds-powered GMC FWD
Motor Homes. Designed for use with our bolt-in motor mount kit, but for
other swaps as well. These headers are hand built, and Mig welded, not mass
produced. If your transmission dipstick tube support bracket uses an exhaust
manifold bolt, you will have to modify the bracket to fit.
I vaguely remember WAAAY back we had a discussion about these headers
vis-à-vis clearance for the trans governor, unfortunately I can't remember
the outcome. I think Larry Weidner has a set of these on his Caddy but I'm
not sure.

Rob,
I dunno! I've heard both ways. I think I've got a couple of
junkers
out in the scrap pile. I'll try to find them in the daylight and
see.

Rob,
Use the Olds tranny dipstick tube. They're a PITA, but a better
fit.
