Maybe someone has dealt with this.

I seem to have a slower connection (download times) when
I am using both Verizon cellular and the wifi from the RV park.

Playing with it now. Both have good signal strength.

Just turned off wifi and my speed is faster. I have seen this before.

Do you get the same results?

Any ideas?

I've taken to using strictly my "aircard" and not hotel or public WiFi.

All it takes is a couple of dirty PC's on the Wifi to drag the speed down to nothing.

ping 235

download speed 0.90 Mbps

Upload speed 0.77 Mbps

I get faster communication with my iphone on cellular than when I am using wifi.
It all depends on the how many people are using either the cell or wifi network at any given time.

When you have both the wifi and cell (USB card, etc) turned on at the same time, one will default, usually the internal wireless card which, in your case was the local wifi from the RV park. When you turned that off, you went wireless with Verizon, which was faster.

If there were a bunch of people on the local wifi connection, even though you had great signal strength (meaning you were closer to the base station which is not an indicator of network speed) you would all be fighting for limited bandwidth on whatever the RV park had.

Richard,

When I visit the USA I have a Verizon USB 760 Modem I activate for Internet
access.

The software for that unit requires that you select WiFi or Wireless mode it
will not use both at the same time.

Are you saying that there is some other software and internal modem in the
laptop accessing the Internet at the same time as the Verizon modem is going
wireless?

What Verizon modem and software are you using?

I am using a ipad2. I'm not very Apple savvy, so don't really
know what Steve Jobs put in this box.

It is a stock, un-hacked unit.

If I'm reading this correctly, his Airport (the internal wifi connection)
and the USB Verizon connection shouldn't connect at the same time, even if
they're plugged in at the same time. The Airport will attempt to grab an IP
(internet protocol address) from the local LAN (the RV campsite internet)
and the Verizon USB card will attempt to do the same with it's connection.
You could be having something as simple as IP conflicts trying to use both
networks at the same time.

I'd unplug one or the other -- turn the airport off and use the verizon
connection, or vice versa.. but not both.

This a very common problem on Windoze. Other OS's can handle multiple IP connections at the same time. Windoze get's confused and sometimes responds on the wrong interface. The problem gets exacerbated if the addresses are assigned by DHCP and the two received address are on the same subnet. That really screws up things and causes retransmits on correctly received packets.

Run one or the other interface but not both.

The iPad will chose one or the other (will use WiFi if it's available in preference to Cellular network).

Two networks won't work simultaneously because of timing issues (ping) and addressing issues (IP address).

Back in the bad old days, we used to have two phone modems "bonded" together to get a blistering 110 kbps, which today would illicit a huge yawn from our teenagers. It was a major production to get it going, and timing was the entire issues.

I let my Mac Book Air get acquired by daughter number 2 when I moved into the iPad as a replacement. It does not get any better in planes, trains, automobiles and now motorhomes.

Night before last, my son Alan, who's now our computer expert (independent
computer consultant) found that my system, which I've used daily for the
past 6 years, had an IP conflict problem: Turns out both the DSL modem and
my wifi router were set to DCHP so that two IP addresses were being assigned
to each connected computer. It had never given me a problem on our
computers nor other visitors'. But his and his son's new computers could
not connect reliably.

Too complex for me. I'm still mentally back on CP/M.

Should have explained my set up in more detail.

I'm using a ipad2. Which has no USB ports to plug in cellular modem, or anything else.
My iPad came with both wifi and a built in modem, service with Verizon
was/ is included.

I assumed that turning on both at once ( if both were in range) would supply a little more send/receive power.

Anyone tried this?

Thanks

Richard,

We love our iPad and chose the 3G version primarily because of the GMC. I leave both WiFi and cellular on most of the time and it defaults to WiFi. From time to time we've found very slow WiFi service and turned it off to use 3G, which I've always been pleased with.

The battery life is so good that I don't worry about a little draw from the radio.

My iPad is only WiFi, so I can't say for sure but since the WiFi and Verizon systems are completely different technology, I think it is "either one, but not both" that works. On my Big Mac (MBP) I shut one down when using the other.

There are Cradlepoint WiFi routers that will take cable modem inputs, Cell phone inputs, and DSL inputs and default from one to another in case of any one input failing.. for when you absolutely have to have a connection, but the output is all WiFi to the computer or pad.

The other thing I was thinking is that you could have two WiFi inputs on close channels that are interfering with each other and slowing things down. I now always use my Verizon cell modem with a Cradlepoint WiFi router (even in the car) and sometimes the Cradlepoint gets into a fight with another WiFi router close by, which does slow stuff down a lot.

Just some random thoughts for you.

Ok, I understand now.. yes having them both on won't improve things, and
actually makes it more complicated, because you are using different
technologies to connect. You definitely need to make sure either one is
off.

the internal verizon card seems to be having issues (at least on the
interwebs for people) and they're moving to usb sticks or upgraded
connection cards.

good luck!

Interesting.

Which of the Cradlepoint models do you use?

I use a cradlepoint 350 in the Jeep (with a 12 volt supply) and a USB 720 Verizon cell net modem plugged into it. I generally use a Wilson external antenna for the 720. It is reliable, and works most places that I travel to and through. When I use my travel trailer, the "car fi" is my net source and thus I have my own wireless hot spot for the RV. BTW, it only takes .2 amp to run the Cradlepoint and 720 , so I just leave it on when out camping.

When at my winter home in AZ, I use a cradlepoint 1000 with that same USB 720 as the net source. It has N service and is a bit more powerful and faster than the 350.

Here at home in Idaho, I have to use Wild Blue satellite service, as we have absolutely no cell reception from any provider. I use an Apple router here.
